First, I want to welcome to these DAM pages the new secretary of the class of '49. Doug Thomson is a fellow gyrene, Phi Delt brother, and Tuckee. On the other hand and despite all those things, he is a good guy and you can believe almost all of what he writes.
Our vox clamatis in boondocks, 5ifty Joe, reports that the bios for our 50th Reunion book are still only trickling in. Please, PLEASE, if you haven't already done so, get hot on writing yours and send it off to Joe along with a picture. The deadline for publication is fast approaching!
Our class lost an active and loyal member with the death of Betsy Pinkham, who died in April after a series of massive strokes. After Gordie's death in 1985, Betsy started the class widows' program, which has been so important in helping us to keep in touch with those who wanted to. Living close by in Eastman, she attended virtually all our Hanover executive committee meetings, mini-reunions, and other gatherings, and we all will miss her friendly smile and good nature.
In spite of the sad occasion, Barbara and I had a great weekend visit with Joy and BenShaver. They flew up to Boston from Annapolis for Betsy's funeral, which was held in Kennebunk, Maine, her daughter's home. Howie West wrote with an interesting slant on the current flap about fraternities at Dartmouth. He thinks making the fraternities go coed "will be successful in diverting attention from the kegs." He adds that in our time "it was a serious crime to have unchaperoned females overnight in dorms or houses. Now you are in trouble if you don't have them." Tom Ruggles sent along the program for the Wearers of the Green gathering in Boston, an annual event which honors All-Americans, Olympians, and other champion Dartmouth athletes. Our own Bill Carpenter was inducted as an honorary member in recognition of his many years of recruiting, advising, and sponsoring, and for his "low-profile, high-impact interest in athletics at Dartmouth." Tom organized a "multi-class" band which entertained, and he also reported having a nice chat with Gerry Sarno.
Remember the upcoming fall mini on Oct. 22-24, always a great time to revisit Hanover.
A word for those whose grandchildren have taught them how to use a computer: If you are on the 'Net, it's awful easy (as well as good practice) to send me an e-mail with a few words to help me make future columns more interesting. My address is shown below.
Lastly, and once again, help us make the 50th Reunion book a memorable one by sending in your bio sketch and picture. Now!
