It is always great to get good news about anyone, particularly classmates. One of our classmates, Jonathan Bagger, just received said recognition recently. John, chair of the department of physics and astronomy, is one of five faculty members in the John Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences named to the Krieger-Eisenhower professorships in recognition of their scholarly achievement and devotion to the academic life of the university. "Holders of the Krieger-Eisenhower chairs are intended to embody the ideal of the scholar working within the academy, engaging in research of the highest quality while simultaneously enriching the intellectual lives of students and colleagues, both within the university and out." John has spent 20 years studying the theory and phenomenology of the super symmetric extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics.
Steven White is a managing director of Morgan Stanley. I had the good fortune to run into Steve at a cocktail party at the Marriott in New York City Times Square in early June. I was attending the government finance officers convention and Morgan Stanley was one of the sponsors of the event. Steven spends most of his time in New York City and occasionally makes it down to Washington on business. When Steve is not busy doing deals for Morgan Stanley, he is out on the golf course. James Washington is in the Washington, D.C., area working for the FAA. I called Jim the other day and, of course, he was out on the tennis court.
Recently I was at a birthday party and Caldwell Gaffney was there, cooking some of his famous St. Louis bar-b-que ribs. He had his two sons with him. Caldwell III will be a junior this fall and a starting defensive end on the Dickinson College football team. His younger son Chancellor is 12 years old and taller than his dad, an excellent student and very good baseball player. Caldwell spends a lot of time at Little League games.
In April the Dartmouth Club of Washington held its annual open house for newly accepted candidates to Dartmouth. And guess who was there? None other than Missy Attridge, with her son, Jimmy, who is one of 24-plus '77 legacies in the class of 2007. Have a great fall!
