Another class trip, this one a 23-day cruise from Santiago, Chile, to Buenos Aires, leaving February 9, 2005, has been arranged. It includes three days in Santiago, a 14-day cruise around Cape Horn with seven port calls along the way and ends with a threeday stay in Buenos Aires. Already signed on are Doug Keare, Jon Gundersen, Cliff Allen, Roger Schumacher and their wives, plus Karen Merrels and a friend. This trip has something for everyone. Bob Mackay will be in Buenos Aires when the ship docks, so give Roger a call at (609) 298-3999.

The Chi Phi class of '56 is arranging another of its mini-reunions, this one at Savannah's Hyatt Regency, next April 17 through the 20. Forrest Gump was filmed there, but it's not clear how that affected the choice. At this writing, in late August, George Fenner, Dave Duane, Bill Balliette, Pren Carnell, Steve Newnham, Nate Metzger, Ron Post, Dave Dolben and Todd Driscoll have signed on with spouses or special friends. There'll be golf, charter fishing, riverboat cruises and tours of forts and battlegrounds: all designed to give plenty of time for reconnecting in anticipation of our 50th.

Chuck Ray got conversation going on our class listserv when he shared an 1895 eighthgrade final test reported in the Salina, Kansas, Journal. The exam covering grammar, arithmetic, U.S. history, geography and orthography took six hours to complete and gives the saying, "he only had an eighth-grade education," a whole new meaning! Here are some sample questions: "Give nine rules for the use of capital letters. If a load of wheat weighs 3,942 pounds, what is it worth at 50 cents/bushel, deducting 1,050 pounds for tare? Give the epochs into which U.S. history is divided. Name all the republics of Europe and give the capital of each. What are the following and give examples of each: trigraph, subvocals, diphthong, cognate letters, linguals?" Some of us thought it was hard to get into Dartmouth back in the early 19505. I can imagine how often I would have repeated the eighth grade in Salina!

The College alerted me to the death on May 20 of Leon E. Induni. He was recovering from post-operative complications following a January surgery. This column had only recently highlighted his quarter-century career as town treasurer of Easton. His obituary appears in this issue of DAM.

Many of you can imagine the kick I got out of competing in the Ryder Cup-formatted Cranmer Cup golf tournament this past July in Sheffield, England. Twelve Episcopal clergy from the states defended the cup against a team of Anglican clergy from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Thirty matches, 36 holes a day—and we brought home the cup! What a treat!
