I've been hearing, "You've got mail," a little more often lately, which means, "You've got news." Frank Couper wrote that he is getting married in California this July, near Lake Tahoe, to the high school sweetheart he brought to this past reunion. She is an orange grower in the San Juaquin Valley. He is also keeping in touch with Jim Lawrie (nearby in Reno, Nevada, not far from Tahoe), whom he plans to see when next in the area. Dan Hedges wrote with some proud family news: his wife, Adele, was recently appointed by the governor of Texas to be chief justice of the 14th Court of Appeals in Texas. And she doesn't have any opposition in the next election. Steve Calvert, freed from the burdens of class presidency, wrote that he has been elected to chair the New England and Canadian Maritimes district of the "advancement" profession (alumni relations, fund raising, PR staff at colleges, universities and private high schools). He served on a panel recently with Dartmouth's alumni relations VP Stan Colla'66, and is looking forward to two upcoming visits to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and to Newfoundland. In the summer...less chance of snow. Steve also confessed (?) to a semi-secret part-time life as a fiction writer. Watch the shelves of your local bookstore. And speaking of not-so-secrets: Hank Paulson was profiled in Fortune magazine for his "Secret Life." CEO at Goldman Sachs, he is also a passionate advocate for conservation and animals of all kinds. After Dartmouth and a Harvard M.B.A., he built a house on a part of the family farm in Illinois and raised two children, four raccoons, flying squirrels, alligators, mice, birds, dogs, cats, turtles, frogs, lizards, a tarantula and snakes. Then 1994 brought him to New York as No. 2 at Gold-man, and he became CEO in 1999. Originally a "trailing spouse" to wife Wendy's work with the Nature Conservancy, he is now vice-chair of their board of governors and co-chair of their Asia-Pacific Council. Asia is a particular personal focus for conservation, where saving the rain forests in Indonesia and encouraging environmental consciousness in China are particularly important to him. And another breathtaking secret revealed at our most recent executive committee meeting: Mike Linehan acknowledged that he never used the term "Gear '68," nor wore his beanie, during his freshman year. Will the disclosures never cease? I hope not.. .write me, guys! Other news from the executive committee meeting: This year's ski trip to Jackson Hole in March is up to 18 classmates. Thank you, Gerry Bell. First one in 1999 had only six. At this rate of growth, we'll have more skiing at mini-reunions than at our five-year events. First '6B golf trip set for late April, to Hilton Head; Ed Heald is your traveling pro on this one. Light turnout so far, but stay tuned. Fall mini-reunion will be in Hanover October 22-24, for the Harvard game. And early planning for a 2006 60th birthday party for all of us in the Napa Valley, California, an idea suggested by Ed Schneider. Keep the news coming.
