Greetings! It seems odd as I write this on Presidents Day with snow on the ground here in North Carolina, that it will be read in April when spring will be upon us as will the baseball season. Baltimore Orioles co-GM Jim Beattie has been hard at work putting together a revamped lineup that will assure the American League East of being more interesting than it was last year.
The College has been a welcome source of news of classmates. Just as I thought the pickings would be slim again, the alumni office has supplied me with enough to pass along so I wouldn't have to manufacture anything. The Ohio Academy of Family Physicians passed along news in January that Brian Bachelder.M.D., has been appointed to serve as a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Quality and Scope of Practice for a four-year term. Brian has been an active member of the Ohio academy and a prominent legislative advocate of family physicians, having served as president for 2002-2003.
Brad Agry continues to work as founding partner of Career Team Partners, a New York career and executive coaching firm. He has recently been accepted in the part-time M.A. program in Christian spirituality at the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York City.
The College also passed along a brief article in Better Investing that highlighted Gus Sauter, chief investment officer for Vanguard Group in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. In addition to this position, Gus is also manager of Vanguards Quantitative Equity Group and has been manager of Vanguards REIT Index Fund since its inception in May 1996.
The Darien (Connecticut) Times featured an article on January 1 that highlighted some of the work of Dr. Robert Lindberg, an internist in Darien. The article highlighted Bobs travels from the Medical College of Virginia through the National Health Service and finally back to the northeast at Stamford, Connecticut, hospital. Bob has been involved with Stamford's alcohol treatment program as well as teaching clinical medicine at Columbia University and being an assistant professor of medicine at New York Medical College.
From the Internet the College gleaned ajan- uary 13 announcement that Kevin S. Moore had been elected to the Cyberonics board of directors. This was the result of The Clark Estates Inc. ex- ercising its right to designate one person to the Cyberonics board of directors. Kevin is president of The Clark Estates Inc. Quoted in the an- nouncement was Cyberonics chairman of the board and CEO, Robert P. "Skip" Cummins, who commented that they welcomed Kevins experience as a director of public companies and his public company investment experience. In addition to being president of The Clark Estates Inc., which manages the business and financial affairs of the Clark family, founder of I.M. Singer & Cos., Kevin also serves on the boards of directors of Ducommun Inc.,3D Systems Corp. and the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum, where he is also treasurer.
I also received a copy of an article from a southern Florida Weekly that Martin E. Doyle, of counsel with the law firm of Sacher, Zelman, Van Sant, Paul, Beiley, Hartman, Rolnick & Waldman, PA, spoke at a continuing legal education semi- nar in Miami in November. The topic was "Merg- ers & Acquisitions in Florida: The At of Doing Deals." I don't know particularly about the Flori- da portion of the seminar, but its a safe bet that "The Art of Doing Deals" may trace its origin to the basement of Sigma Nu from 1973-1976 where there were few dull moments. Its my recollection that their social chairman was a key to making sure that all deals were done to assure that entertainment and libation were never in short supply.
Enough for now, please pass along news of yourself and classmates.
