"On Fridayjune 11 at 6:25 p.m., as the world mourned the passing of a great American, a smaller population celebrated the birth of Olivia Grace Malin, a woman who will undoubtedly match if not exceed the accomplishments of Ronald Reagan," writes proud papa Rob Malin. "While she is yet to choose her path to greatness, she has already delighted and amazed her parents with her strength, determination and beauty." Seen in New Orleans in May during the 35th annual Jazz Fest: Rafael Aguirre-Sacasa, Jim Lucier and fiancee-at-the-time Colleen Haley (more to come on this later), Rob Schon, Leigh Zarelli,Steve Crandall and rumored-to-be-in-town EddieGilmartin. The highlights were many and are a bit hazy to recall but suffice it to say that a good time was had by all despite one day of absolutely biblical rain. You'd be amazed how a base of cochon de kit, shrimp macque choux, beignets, Turbo Dogs and a Hurricane or three can fortify you until the small hours of the morning. If you haven't been to Jazz Fest I have one word for you: GO.
"One part Sting, one part Dave Matthews and another part Dan Fogelberg with enough of his own homegrown ingredients to triple sweeten the ears with a satisfying groove—you must have pulled up a seat to a Pat Burtis concert," that's how The Pacifica Tribune reviewed a June performance by Pat at Sanchez Concert Hall in Pacifica, California. Not a bad trio of musical luminaries to be compared with, well at least two of em anyway, wouldn't you say? Despite such effusive praise Pat has forsaken the touring life of playing various Enormo Domes night in and night out, fending off 20-something groupies, presidential suites in four-star hotels and viewing the world through the windows of his own customized tour bus after two and a half years of making a go of it as a singer and songwriter in San Francisco. By the time of publication of this column he will be a grad student at Yale.
As referenced earlier in the program Jim Lucier and Colleen Haley were married on June 5 in Woodstock. Included among the wedding highlights were the rehearsal dinner at the DOC House, fine twist-top kosher wine and an outrageously funny harmonica concert by Chris Ingersol at the after party. Attendees included Dave Cogar, Lee Elliott, Eric Smith, Chuck Gillman, Corey Shore, Kirk Swann, Cam Petty, Goose Khambatta, Dick Rinkema, Brian Leske, Rafael Aguirre-Sacasa, Leigh Zarelli, Ed Kerrigan and wife Michelle Brownlee '90, Dave Boals 90 John Sulski '90 Jen Williams 92 and Greg Schwartz '92.
