By the time you read this, summer will be over and fall sports activities will be in full swing. I just received my ticket application package for the Dartmouth football team, and it is hoped that a successful season will not only galvanize the interest of the student body, but also the long-suffering alumni. I still feel that fall in Hanover is the best time of the year. I imagine that there are still some of us that are loading our children's belongings into the SUV and carting them off to college. When I arrived in Hanover for freshman year, I brought two suitcases and a small trunk. Nowadays, with all of the electronic equipment, including computers, stereos, printers, refrigerators, etc., it takes a small moving van to transport our children to college!
William Fitzpatrick has been named the interim publisher of the Times Herald of Olean, New York, becoming the fourth generation of Fitzpatricks to hold that post. William began at the Times Herald in 1971 after graduating from Dartmouth and worked for several departments before becoming the head of the business office.
News from the Alumni Fund indicates that our class raised $423,557, with 47.9 percent participation. Even though this amount was not as substantial as we would have liked, there was an increase in donors and revenue. Congratulations to Tim Dreisbach and his crew for another stellar performance.
Believe it or not, we are nine months away from our 35th reunion. Since it will be our first Monday-through-Thursday event, it is important that we all start planning ahead. The reunion dates are June 12 through June 15, 2006. The reunion committee, headed by chairman Greg Fell, is planning a full and varied schedule of events to make it an interesting, active and fun event for all who attend. Greg and reunion treasurer Dave Brooks have pulled together an energetic committee that promises to plan something of interest for everyone.
With the upcoming reunion it would be good to hear from more classmates about their most recent activities including professional activities, plans for retirement and family news. On a personal note, my eldest daughter, Christina, recently became engaged with a planned wedding date of April 15,2006. Not only will the IRS be in my pocket, but also the catering manager at the reception site. Such is life! A relaxing few days in Hanover seeing some old friends and a round of golf will suit me fine. Make plans to join your classmates in Hanover because we don't know what the next five years hold in store for us.
Finally, word from the College is that the return on the endowment has reached 18.6 percent, which puts Dartmouth in the upper quartile among similar institutions, and grew the endowment to a total of $2.6 billion, a new record high. Standard & Poors recently renewed Dartmouths Triple A bond rating, citing an impressive management team with conservative budgeting practices.
