It's Monday, February 13, and I just finished digging out from under a record snowfall here in New York. Where are the B&G men when you need them? At least in Hanover they know how to handle the snow removal in an efficient manner.
Speaking of Hanover, our well-ensconced representative in the alumni affairs office, Nelson Armstrong, passes along the following information in regard to Mike Markaverich, who is doing well in Sarasota, Florida. Last summer he was able to record and release So InLove, a compilation of Cole Porter tunes. He also had a successful CD launch party at Caragiulo's Restaurant in downtown Sarasota, where he has been employed since 1996. It was quite a large party, and he sold enough CDs to pay the balance of the recording expenses. He reports that the recording is getting quite of bit of airplay on WUSF-FM in Tampa. All of Mike's recordings are available online at www.cdbaby.com. If you type his name in the artist field you will find biographical information and links to all of his four recordings; there are even audio samples. Fellow alums inquiring about his recordings can also contact him at thejazzcats@comcast. net. We hope that Mike will be able to join us at reunion to play a few songs for our entertainment.
Nels also reports that classmate Andy Harvard continues to do a terrific job of running the College's outdoor program. (Andy has also been recruited to assist with our reunion program.)
Finally, Nels has been lucky to see Tom Price on a regular basis when Tom has returned to campus in support of Buddy Teevens' efforts to support our football players as strong student athletes. Many thanks to Nels for providing "fodder" for this class column.
If you have not received your reunion package yet, visit our class Web site at www.dartmouth.org/classes/71. By visiting the Web site you can get reunion information and even register for reunion.
Peter Hutchinson has launched a third party run for Minnesota governor. Pete, a public policy consultant and former Minneapolis schools chief, expects to carry the Independence Party banner in the 2006 governor's race. Pete anticipates an uphill battle, but he is off to a respectable start in raising campaign cash. The Independence Party, formerly known as the Reform Party in Minnesota, has been a force in the last two gubernatorial campaigns, winning in 1998 with ex-pro wrestler Jesse Ventura and polling in double digits in 2002 with ex-Democratic Congressman Tim Penny.
Finally, I received a Christmas note from Sam Webster, who reports that all is well in Norfolk, Virginia, where he resides with wife, Jane. His daughter Emily is living in Denver and son Russ recently graduated from the University of Colorado. Sam and Jane would love to join their children more often in Colorado, but they have too many commitments in Norfolk to allow extensive visits. Sam hopes to join us at reunion in June.
