This is a last call to mobilize all arts and sciences graduate alumni for the impending Homecoming festivities. The MALS Alumni Council and the Arts and Sciences Graduate Alumni Association of Dartmouth (ASGAAD) are joining forces to give a reception for all graduate alumni and graduate students on Dartmouth Night, Friday, October 21. This gala event will be held between 5 and 7 in the Jaffe-Friede and Strauss Galleries on the first floor of the Hopkins Center. Wine, cheese and fortifying snacks will be served. Appropriate dress depends entirely on weather conditions. Following the party, we will march en masse through Hanover in the Homecoming parade and then join the rest of the crowd for the pep rally and bonfire. We invite each and every one of you to march with us. This is our chance to give visible evidence to the Dartmouth community that we do indeed exist, so please plan on being part of our proud celebration!
This year s annual MALS Alumni Association luncheon was an overwhelming success. Close to 60 of us gathered at the Hanover Inn on July 13 to enjoy lunch and a delightful presentation by professor Barbara Kreiger, chair of the creative writing concentration in the MALS program. Professor Kreiger spoke of her experiences living and working for a year in Italy. We especially enjoyed her descriptions of her patience in dealing with the Italian bureaucracy. At the business meeting following the luncheon, Nermina Zildzo (MALS'05) was elected to the Alumni Council board. We owe a special thanks to Maggie Montgomery (MALS'99) for arranging the afternoon.
I have received word that Dr. Steven Gillis (biology '78) has joined the firm of ARCH Venture Partners in their Seattle office. Dr. Gillis is known as a pioneer and highly respected executive in the biotechnology field. He was an original recruit to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, where he maintained an academic laboratory focused on immune regulation. After co-founding Immunex Corp. in 1981, he served as director of research and development, chief scientific officer, and finally chairman and CEO. Immunex was acquired by Amgen in 2001. He also co-founded Corixa Corp. in 1994 and served as chairman and CEO. Corixa was acquired by Glaxo-Smith Kline in July 2005. As an ARCH venture partner, Dr. Gillis will assist in the development and growth of ARCH s biotechnology portfolio companies and assume board positions in a number of them. He will also be active in the evaluation of new life science technologies.
