Greetings from the land of sports dynasties—and in particular, the traffic that is detouring through Boston for the Patriots' Super Bowl Victory parade today. At least we had something besides endless snow to think of this past winter—Go Pats! And what happens in spring? Oh yeah, the Red Sox. Any winning teams in New York this past year? That would be a no. On to the mailbag.
In the category of "wardrobe malfunction," our own Judge Rick Niess had the zipper on his new black robe get stuck in the middle of being sworn in as Dane County judge (Wisconsin). Fortunately, his wife, Laurie Elwell, came to the rescue and helped him don the robe. Following Dartmouth Niess went to Duke Law School and then followed his wife to Madison, Wisconsin, where for 26 years he specialized in civil and appellate law.
From the West Coast, I received an e-mail (what else would you expect) from Bill Barmeier. 'After spending the 1980s in private practice, the 1990s in corporate management and a short stint in private equity, in 2003, I joined eßay as VP of corporate development," Bill wrote. Bill and his wife, Carol, live in Northern California and they have a daughter at University of Pennsylvania and a son who is a junior in high school. He will be at the reunion in June. Great to hear from you, Bill.
And Howie Hawkins just completed a run for Congress. Howie, a native of San Francisco, founded the Clamshell Alliance in 1976 and the Green Party in 1984. He has been nominated by the Green Party to run for city council, mayor, county executive, state comptroller and Congress. He is a truck loader for UPS, where he has worked for four years.
I received a note from Joanne Herman. Joannes note reads, in part, "While you were at Dartmouth, you may have heard Joanne reading the news on WDCR. But,you say, the name doesn't ring a bell? That's because Joanne had a different first name back then. Joanne transitioned after much soul searching and the result has been that she is at ease and happy for the first time in her life. Joanne and her spouse will celebrate 30 years of marriage this May. Joanne has held various finance positions since graduation from Dartmouth and is currently controller of the New England Foundation for the Arts in Boston."
And what would the holiday season be like without the annual Bob Hittle family letter? Bob writes, "It's difficult to figure out where to start our tale, but let me point out that our mailing address has changed from sunny California to the ever-changing Midwest—lndianapolis to be exact. You may be pondering why? Those with small children can understand: life balance." Bob now covers the Midwest and Carolinas for Temple Inland and Rosita owns and operates The Goddard School near Geist. They send their best.
Remember:The reunion is fast approaching. Save those dates-June 16 through 19! Nancy and I look forward to seeing you there.
