Dartmouth trustees voted in support of the proposed alumni governance constitution at their Septembermeeting. Deviating from its usual practice the College revealed the vote margin, which was 14-3. Subsequently a new alumni group has formed to lobby for passage of the constitution. Known as Dartmouth Alumni for Common Sense (www.dartmouthcommonsense.org), the group includes eight former chairmen of the board of trustees.
The class of 2010 comprises 1,082 students559 of them women. Forty-eight states, 27 countries and 30 languages are represented, with students of color accounting for 31 percent of the class. Seven percent of the students are international. While minds may change, 41 percent plan to major in science, 18 percent in the humanities.
Dartmouth had its most successful fundraisingyear ever in fiscal 2006, with $160.3 million in gifts. The amount represents a 51 percent increase over 2005 and smashed the $118 million record established in 2004. Among other records: The Dartmouth College Fund had the greatest number of donors in its history, 24,618.
The Tuck School has been named No. 3among best business schools for Hispanics by Hispanic Business magazine. The ranking took into account recruitment and retention of Hispanic students, percentage of Hispanic students (Tuck's is 7 percent), mentoring and student organizations. A third of Tuck's class of 2008 is international.
Athletic director Josie Harper will beinducted into the National Lacrosse Hallof Fame November 11, in recognition of her coaching career, which began at Penncrest High School in Media, Pennsylvania. As Dartmouth women's lacrosse coach from 1981 to 1992, Harper led Big Green teams to two Ivy championships. The ceremony will take place in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
