A new year has begun for the College and our class. In case you missed it, the first bit of news received about the class was contained in the Colleges annual philanthropy report for 2006 with the wonderful news that we carried on our generous tradition supporting the College with a grand total of more than $1.7 million capped by major gifts to the Thayer School. The Alumni Fund did a great job raising $332,000 for the year. Woody Goss and this team, particularly Paul Merriken and Eliot Smith, are off to a good solid start for 2007 with gifts and pledges more than $200,000 but with only 16 percent participating to date. Alot of work remains. Please get your donations in ASAP as it saves our class agents considerable effort.
Ralph Sautter received a wonderful note from our Japanese classmate Ryutaro Shindo. He is in good health and, he hopes, will be visiting the States soon as a family member is the Japanese ambassador to the United States. Japan remains our most solid ally in the Northern Pacific due to the support of citizens like Taro who cement the bond between our countries.
We have received information on the Class of 1955 John Sloan Dickey Scholarship Fund. A great group of Dartmouth undergrads is supported by the class's generosity: Andrew Varnum 06, a French and Italian major who worked his way through college at the library and, interestingly enough, as a security guard at the Hood Museum of Art; Amanda K. Brown '07, the late Dick Fairley's granddaughter, a sociology/government major who spent last fall working on Senator Barack Obama's staff; Monica A. Martin de Bustamante '08, a granddaughter of John Ballard with a double major in Romance languages and engineering sciences (no surprise there!) and also a star on the women's soccer team as its leading scorer; and Minal Caron '09, who participates on Dartmouth's nordic ski team and interned last summer for Senator Susan Collins. The class couldn't be more proud of these outstanding students and looks forward to hearing about their career exploits.
As you read this 35 of our classmates and spouses will be boarding their flight to Santiago, Chile. Cecilia and Ed Willi have done a fantastic job arranging for our second international class mini-reunion. Enjoying the sights and sounds of Santiago and its environs will be Marge and Harry Ambrose, Ellen and Marty Aronson, Frances and Joe Bachman, Anne and John Barlow, Sue and Jim Beisman, Sandy and Jerry Bernstein, Justie and John Braestrup, Claudie and Lynmar Brock, Jane and Dave Conlan, Elena and Jere Daniell, Joe Donovan, Marilyn and Jack Doyle, Jill and Dick Hastings, Marta and Buck Kuttner, Shirley and Paul Merriken, Gale and Brooks Parker, Kay and Bob Perkins and Cecilia and Ed Willi.
Keep the news flowing! Stay well, be well!
