During our 50th reunion last June and at our fall mini-class meeting a number of 'sss expressed a desire to hold next fall's Homecoming earlier in October 2006. The College has met our request, and the dates are October 13-15. This means we have a better shot at some great New England foliage, which many classmates and wives desired, and allows those classmates who head south for the winter to do so following our mini-reunion. No excuses now; start your planning for these dates. Joe Mathewson will be enclosing the information on the October mini-reunion in his next newsletter.
As you probably read in the last issue of DAM,}ames Freedman, the Colleges 15th presi- dent, passed away in March. Woody Goss, Bob Fanger and honorary classmate David Halberstam represented 1955 at his funeral service. Jim Freed- man was the right man at the right time for Dart- mouth in that era. The College needed an academic shot in the arm, and we were all pleased at the result when U.S.News & World Report ranked Dartmouth first in undergraduate teaching. He wasn't a bad fundraiser either—$568 million capital campaign—record results for that time.
News from the Finger Lakes Magazine has reached us that our classmate Sterling Klinck has another avocation, boat builder. A lot of class- mates like to woodwork, and he tackled a big pro- ject—a Finger Lake trout boat that can be rowed, fished and sailed. Joe Donovan does another neat thing focused on historic/classic cars, currently restoring a 1948 Chrysler Town and Country. Let us know what projects or civic activities you are committing to in your retirement years. A number of our classmates are getting together for lunches and dinners, such as Paul Merriken, Ken Lundstrom, Tim Anderson, Dave Miller, Tom McGreevey, Dave Conlan in North Carolina; and Ralph Sautter, Larry Veator and John del Isola had a good get-together in Florida recently.
A number of our classmates are traveling just received a report that Bob and Jane Hayes were spotted on the Yangtze River in China. Randy and Betty Hayes had a round-the-world trip on a Cunarder. Dick and Joanne Targett have been running around the U.S.A. attending graduation ceremonies for a number of their 16 grandchildren. Finally, some travel of a different and more serious kind—Tom and Carol Calloway have a lieutenant colonel son-in-law on active duty in Iraq.
A friend of Harry Neuberger gave the positive suggestion that we send him a card at his assisted living facility, BOX 288, Stevenson, MD 21153. On a sad note, we have received advice that Bill Bassett and John Batchelder have passed away. Obituaries will be in future issues of DAM.
Keep the news flowing. Stay well, be well.
