Here's some good news from Virginia Tech. Jim Campbell, professor of geography in the College of Natural Resources has received the university's Undergraduate Alumni Advising Award. The award is given to an individual who serves undergraduates in exemplaryways. Jim received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas and since 1976 has been at Virginia Tech, where he specializes in land reclamation and remote-sensing techniques.
Back in 1971 Peter Lake, then an underwater adventure photographer, appeared in the iconic documentary Blue Water, White Death, the story of a man-eating shark and the men he tries to eat. It inspired Jaws and countless creature-eats-man flicks. Adigitally restored and remastered version has just been released as a DVD and Peter is again in the public eye, appearing on talk shows around his home in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Peter still recommends the epic—"You can see me almost eaten by a great white shark, if that would amuseyou," he writes. When not flirting with disaster in the deep Peter sells houses and condoson on dryland.
It's that time when classmates are pulling up old roots and planting new ones. Rick and Margy Kornblum have settled into Margy's 1845 vintage family home on Cape Cod. "It needs a lot of work, but is a labor of love." The couple is happy to be near son Rick and daughter-in-law Suzie, both '91s, and their three grandchildren. Other Kornblum kids are doing fine—Jackie has a new job at the Dalton School, Chris is a Chicago banker and Kate is at NYU.
Rob and Judy Cleary are also on the move-heading to Novatno, California, from Colorado. "There was a day when all my possessions could fit into my car," Rob recalls. No more. Sound familiar? miliar?
The Clearys will be about 15 miles from San Francisco, where Yanek S.Y. Chiu is a practicing surgeon. Yanek sums up the feelings of many classmates who were fortunate enough to have a child go back to Hanover. "My daughter Tanya is a proud graduate of the Dartmouth class of 2007. The Commencement was wonderful and the Big Green looked so special, even in the rain. I got very nostalgic, knowing how I felt 41 years ago on the same campus."
