Two more stalwarts have left us recently. On November 13, 2008, Dr. Colin Holman died after a very lengthy illness. Collie was a practitioner and professor of radiology at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Medical School. On January 24 Gordon King passed away. Gordy had been president and CEO of Hanover Shoe Inc. during its postwar growth and eventual sale to a British company. He was especially proud that all three of his sons are Dartmouth graduates. Our condolences to the families of Collie Holman and Gordy King.
Going through old files some early Thirty-Nine Outs came to light. What feelings of nostalgia! And sadness in reading the names of so many classmates who are no longer with us. The oldest newsletter is February 1974, with remarks and many pictures of the mini-reunion in October 1973. Walt Darby was the newsletter editor. There were 42 classmates at the mini (too many to name), plus wives. Of the 42, only five are now living.
Walt wrote: “After the game (Dartmouth-Penn) Mary and I went up to Bob Dickgiesser’s cabin (in Hartford, Vermont) and met with other Sigma Nu’s Hal McGilpin, Bill Cunningham, Horton Wainwright, Duke Lyon plus Zeta Psi Ted Wolfe.” Ted is the only survivor. Also: “We had a grand surprise when Bob MacLeod appeared on the scene at the usual postgame gathering at the Kaisers’.”
Plan to make our 70th reunion, October 2-4.
