Greetings, ’72 brethren! This missive will reach you during both exciting and changing times at Dartmouth. Along with the always wonderful celebration of Commencement here at “home,” we are as you know on the cusp of a change of leadership. I’ve had the distinct, perhaps unique, privilege of serving five Dartmouth presidents during my 41 years in Hanover, and from that perspective I will surely miss Jim and Susan Wright, with whom I’ve been fortunate to spend much quality time through my work. I can tell you unequivocally they are two of the finest people I ever hope to meet. Jim and I belong to the same trout club, so perhaps it won’t be a final parting!
Give a rouse for Wayne Young, who was inducted into the Wearers of the Green, Dartmouth’s elite sports hall of fame, on May 16 in Boston! Founded in 1984, inductions occur only once every five years.
I think Joe Davis speaks for all of us in his message to Wayne: “I’m really happy that they’ve finally acknowledged your long service to sport at Dartmouth. They say this is for being captain of the football team, but if they don’t mention your contributions to baseball and rugby, they’re missing [an important!] part of the story. Congratulations and best wishes.”
I’ve also learned our esteemed brother Greg Yadley has been named to Chambers USA America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. The qualities on which rankings are assessed include technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, diligence, commitment and other qualities highly valued by the client. Yads, you do us proud!
Another “shout out” is due our brother Joel Hyatt, co-founder and CEO of Current Media, an independent media company led together with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. Joel conducted a fireside chat at the Tuck School on April 22 as part of the 2008-2009 Britt Technology Impact Series.
Jon Einsidler reports Myra Sack ’10 (daughter of Mike Sack) earned several honors this fall: first team all Ivy in soccer as well as second team Academic All-American. Haley Carstensen ’12 (daughter of Chip Carstensen) plays for the women’s water polo team, which swept the New England championships at Middlebury in April and went on to the Nationals after my deadline.
Chip and Marilynn traveled to the Middlebury match, staying with Joe Fallon and his wife, Ellen. Shel Prentice, whose own daughter Julie ’09 joins the proud ranks of our alumnae this year, met them all at the tournament (mini-reunion, Shel?).
Get this! Our brother in Scotland Young Dawkins writes, “Thanks for the shout out about the wedding in the Alumni Mag. It was a good one—September 29, 2007—Nels Armstrong ’71, Ken McGill and Sal Sciretto ’92 all in attendance. And here is even more news-my wife, Ruth, from the Outer Hebrides, and I just had a baby boy, Thomas Parran Dawkins, born March 31. Retirement? I don’t think so.” Congratulations, laddie!
Best always in green.
