It is with great sadness that I report that George Cheng passed away on September 25 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Peter Mancoll shared some memories of his friend: “He was a really good, considerate, nice, positive person. He used to send me an e-mail on my birthday every year. I’m sure he sent out those notes to a whole lot of people. He was the first to visit when I had a hernia operation. We went hiking to Yellowstone a few weeks after graduation, when he visited me while I was vacationing at my sister’s place in Wyoming. George was such an enthusiastic person. He loved his Sports Center and T-shirts; he had an extensive collection of T-shirts assembled from different events. To this day I still follow (and dish out) a piece of advice he gave me shortly before graduation. George was getting people together for a little East Coast road trip to see three baseball games in two days. At first I didn’t want to go because I was (as usual) behind on some papers. He said, ‘What are you going to remember in five years? That you did some work on some papers or will you remember this baseball trip?’ Twelve years since and I still remember that advice and that trip (the papers, not so much).”
