Reverend Ozora S. Davis, D.D., president of Chicago Theological Seminary, has published recently through the University of Chicago Press '"The Principles of Preaching." The Secretary has not read the book. He would not be competent to review it if he had. It can be stated, however, that the book is intended both for students in theological seminaries and preachers in the field. These sentences are quoted from some comments made by a Philadelphian clergyman:

"Sermon making is studied here according to procedure of a 'literary laboratory'. Mathews at Columbia and Baker at Harvard are teaching dramatic writing in the same way. Eight typical sermons by representative preachers are printed in full and are studied inductively, by the aid of 'worksheets'.

"The second part of the book contains, packed into eighty pages in terse language, more serviceable and sensible advice about sermonizing than we have met before in a long while."
