Dr. Henry Mann Silver, A.M., '72 Dartmouth, was honored by a banquet at the Hotel Roosevelt, New York, on March 2, 1931, given by about 125 of his colleagues and former students in celebration of his eightieth birthday. The local institutions represented were: Bellevue, Gouverneur, and Beth Israel Hospitals, the New York Infirmary for Women and Children, the New York Academy of Medicine, the New York County Medical Society, the Society of Alumni of Bellevue Hospital, the Medical Association of Greater New York, and the Medical Union.
The toastmaster was Dr. Nathan B. VanEtten, a former pupil. The speakers were Francis Huber, M.D.; LeGrand Kerr, M.D., president of the Medical Association of Greater New York, a pupil; George Henry Semken, M.D., surgeon; Rev. Claude C. Coile, D.D., and Rev Henry Howard, D.D., pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian church, of which church Dr. Silver is chairman of the board of deacons. All the addresses gave abundant testimony to the fine personal qualities and professional skill as well as the high ideals of Dr. Silver in the practice of his profession. Dr. Charles L. Dana '72, LL.D., was present.
After Dr. Silver had responded, Dr. Seth Hirsch of the committee presented him with a beautiful copy of Cicero's "De Senectute," translated and printed by Benjamin Franklin.
Dr. Silver is still in active practice in surgery and counsel, and plans to carry out the desires of his colleagues and former pupils by the continuance of his professional duties at the ripe age of eighty years young.
