Sports writers who saw the Big Green eleven open its season against Norwich on September 29 are unconvinced by the bear stories which have gone out over the wires from Hanover of late, and some of the gentlemen of the press have gone so far as to accuse Earl Blaik of crying "Wolf! Wolf!" a little too early in the season. Paeans of praise for the Dartmouth team arrive steadily, via the Boston and New York journals, and rumblings of dissatisfaction emanate just as steadily from Memorial Field and Davis Field House. Small wonder, then, that the local onlooker is completely flabbergasted by such a state of affairs. One writer who has made several visits to Hanover this fall reports that he has never seen the Dartmouth constituency so bewildered before.
What happened is probably this. A bevy of prominent sports writers headed for Hanover to watch Dartmouth make its debut under Earl Blaik, and they saw a team that had remarkable drive, precision and coherence for an opening game. They headed back to their various metropolises, duly impressed and with an idea that the Big Green would continue to progress at the same rate. Injuries to Clark, Nairne, Erion, Aieta and others, however, threw things out of joint, and the consequent necessity of grooming reserve players slowed down the general advance. With the Harvard game less than two weeks off, the Green coaches are naturally a little reluctant to remain calm, but those who came and saw and were impressed still prefer to believe that everything is rosy on Hanover Plain.
