The Dartmouth lacrosse team learned all about the game from St. John's and Johns Hopkins during the spring recess, and returned to Hanover to defeat the Boston Lacrosse Club, 5 to 4, on April 13. The contest at Harvard a week later resulted in a 7-4 victory for the Crimson.
Tommy Dent's unseasoned club fell prey to St. John's at Annapolis by a 15-1 score, and in its second game of the Maryland trip was routed by the crack Johns Hopkins team at Baltimore, 19-4. The opening game marked the first scrimmage of the season for the Indians, and they were no match for the smooth-passing home team. The Johns Hopkins game started off well for Dartmouth, with Dick Halvorsen leading the Green stickmen to a 2-1 lead. Two fast goals by Hopkins seemed to demoralize the Indian defense, and thereafter the Baltimore team scored almost at will.
Returning to Hanover, the Indians opened their home season with an overtime victory at the expense of the Boston Lacrosse Club. Halvorsen and Lansburgh led the Green attack during the regulation game, with Bill Hoffman tallying the overtime goal that gave Dartmouth victory. John Donovan, former Dartmouth star, led the visitors' attack, while Price,'one-armed player and former Swarthmore captain, amazed spectators with his spectacular game.
At Cambridge the Green and Crimson teams battled on even terms for two periods, but Harvard went on a four-goal rampage in the third session and sewed up the contest. Halvorsen, West and Millard scored for Dartmouth in the second period, with Wright contributing the final Green tally in the fourth period. The game was slow throughout, with a soggy field hindering the play of both sides.
So far this season the Green team has lined up with Clark, goal; Rosenberg, point; Shafer, cover point; Hinman, first defense; Dyer, second defense; Wright and Millard at center; Lansburgh, second attack; Halvorsen, first attack; West, outhome; and Boeckel and Harris, in-home.
