CORNELL WINS AGAIN
April 1934 C. E. Widmayer '30

Dolly Stark's courtmen went straight to Ithaca from New Haven, and there they lost to Cornell for the second time, 37 to 21. Dartmouth's passing game was vastly improved over that of two nights previous, but the Big Red five, gunning for no less than second place, was too good for the Green. Cornell ran away to a 16-5 lead in the first half, but the work of Henry Kraszewski, Sid Krivitsky and Al Bonniwell cut this lead to five points early in the second period. The Ithacans then cut loose, and through the sharpshooting of Houck, Freed and Ferraro forged ahead to a 34-20 advantage before Dartmouth added its final point.

The Green shooting did not keep pace with the passing, but was erratic throughout the game. Bob Miller and Sid Krivitsky led the Dartmouth scorers with six points each, and Al Bonniwell tallied five.

Against Harvard on March 3 the Indian five had an easy time, and captured its second decision over the Crimson, 46-28. Al Bonniwell tallied 15 points at Cambridge and jumped from third to first place in league scoring. Dartmouth led Harvard by only five points at the end of the first period, but the rapid-fire shooting of Bonniwell, Bob Miller, and Fergie Hubbell, who also tallied 15 points, soon turned the game into a rout. These three men accounted for 40 of Dartmouth's 48 points.

Two nights later the Green five brought its season to a close by defeating Columbia, 24 to 22, at New York. The Indians had things their own way in the first half and piled up an 18-9 lead, but in the second half the Lions limited Dartmouth to a single goal from the floor, and soon came within one point of tying the score, 23 to 22, on baskets by Meisel, McDowell, Asselin, and Maroon. Al Bonniwell contributed a free throw with less than a minute to go, and settled the final score at 24-22. Dartmouth's superiority at the foul line was the deciding factor, the Indians sinking 8 of 12 tries, while the Lions missed 8 out of 12. Bonniwell maintained his lead in the league scoring race, but Ferraro tallied 12 points against Harvard several nights later and nosed out the Green forward in the final standing, 128 to 126.
