The Dartmouth ski team's invasion of the Far West met with just about all the success Coach Otto Schniebs had hoped for, when three members of the Green team finished within the first five in the combined slalom and downhill event at the National Championships and Olympic trials at Mt. Rainier, Washington, on April 13 and 14. Dick Durrance, Dartmouth's sensational freshman skier, led the American field by finishing second behind Hannes Schroll, young Austrian star, who crains the national downhill and slalom titles but is not eligible for the United States Olympic team. Ted Hunter took fourth and Link Washburn fifth in the combined event, with Bob Livermore of the Ski Club Hochgebirge finishing third and giving the East something of a sweep after the two-day competition. Captainelect "Bern" Woods finished 15th in the combined rating, while Warren Chivers, the fifth member of the Green team, was not placed because he lost the course in the thick fog near the top of the mountain and failed to finish.

In taking second in the combined event, Durrance finished second in the downhill and third in the slalom. In the downhill, he covered the mile and four-fifths course in 3 minutes 42 seconds, which was seven seconds slower than the time of Schroll and twelve seconds faster than that of Washburn, who finished third in the down-mountain race. Ted Hunter took seventh behind Bob Livermore, the Boston representative, while Bern Woods placed fifteenth.
