On the way to the Secretaries' Association meeting, and several times since, calls at Concord have resulted in nice visits with "Skid" who is cheerful and looks well, although still confined to the house. He reports that he has had a number of callers from '93, among whom have been Dodge, Cox, Mann, and Woodbury. He reports Woodie as looking fine and Billy Mann as looking particularly well preserved. Billy is taking it easy and spending much of his time each year in Vermont where he has numerous friends and from where he reports that Dr. Burbank is very highly respected in his professional and private life.
Late word from Cox is that he is on his way to Washington, presumably summoned by the President for consultation. He has just returned to his office from his month's vacation on his farm at Pittsfield where he has been entertaining various celebrities, including his brothers, and had as a neighbor the distinguished Dr. Walter Scott of Berkeley, California. Dr. Scott has written and dedicated to Guy a poem in praise of New Hampshire, its scenery, and its people.
Billy Jarvis is still on the move although his family is living in Boston where young Billy is enrolled at the Harvard Law School. Ted Weston is a Director of the reorganized Derry, New Hampshire, Chamber of Commerce. Sam French was a special guest at a meeting of the Lebanon Rotary Club where the speaker of the occasion was Sam's son-in-law, Rev. L. L. Dunnington of Duluth, Minnesota.
The names of Charlie French, Sanders, E. S. Miller, and Harry Metcalf are in the New Hampshire papers frequendy as active in affairs of the community and state.
A report on the Commencement of this year was that Martyn, Griffith, and your Acting Secretary had rooms in the same building as the Class of '94 which was "reuning," and therefore found the time passing all too quickly. See '94 Class report. "Eddie" is very well and so is the "King" although the "King" grieves considerably at the continued illness of Mrs. Martyn.
Many of you will remember Lilley Eaton, the medic who was quite a star on the baseball teams of '91 and '92. He has retired and is living near Hanover. He and his wife were in evidence during Commencement to our mutual enjoyment. Also, John Childs showed up the latter part of the Commencement period, having entered with his daughter for the Hanover Holiday which follows Commencement.
Saltmarsh, who looks well and is very active, is a Trustee of Pinkerton Academy, Derry, New Hampshire, and also acts as business manager of that institution. George Pender of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is very active in probably the best medical practice in that part of New England.
The whole class will grieve to learn that Mrs. Wright passed on in the early summer. It has been a great shock to the Doctor, who is not real well but who is doing his best to take his loss philosophically.
While in Maine in August, had a very nice visit with Mrs. Kinney and waited quite a while for the "Deacon." Am sorry to have missed him. Mrs. Kinney reports he is very well aside from his inability to get around by himself although he is able to, and does drive his car alone. He does occasional preaching, and they are very comfortably and happily situated in their home at Ellsworth Falls.
In May, your Acting Secretary attended the Secretaries' Association meeting and later, during Commencement, attended the Alumni Council meetings. At both sessions the subject of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE 100 per cent subscription problem came up. It is practically impossible for all members of the Class of '93 to subscribe to this most estimable magazine, but each one who can possibly arrange it, even though it hurts a little, should send in his subscription form, signed,' and with check attached, at an early date. Last year a personal letter was sent to each one, and the results were fairly satisfactory. A letter this year should not be necessary. Each member of the Class whose address is known will receive a copy of this issue and a blank subscription form. Please fill this in. As to the Alumni Fund, '93 bettered its position of previous years, both as to the number of subscribers and the total amount subscribed.
Secretary, Upland Way, Barrington, R. I.
