Every mail brings additional evidence that '28ers are aware of their responsibilities in this war, although you frequently read statements in the newspapers that the country does not realize the gravity of the situation. Twenty-one of our class are already in uniform—14 in the Army and 9 in the Navy. Many others, particularly those selling automobiles, have seen their business close up for the duration. Si Warner is interned in Japan with other American diplomats, Chris Livingston, when last heard from was in Hong Kong and George Bell was on the Burma Road. The war is affecting a great many more of us, but not a man complains. The feeling is that we've a job to do and we'd better pitch in quickly and get it over with.

In the Navy are Lieutenants (j.g.) Baketel, Bassett, Hazzard, Hunt, Kitts (Marine Corps), Nespor, Simonds and Van Benschoten. These men have all been mentioned in previous notes, the only newcomer is Lt. (s.g.) Myles Lane who was sworn in February 21 in Boston and is now to be found in the North Station Office Building there. For the past five years Myles has been an Assistant U. S. District Attorney in New York.

In the Army are Captains Costello, Keith, George Lee and Prosser; Lieutenants Bob Clark, Buchtel, and Nightingale; Staff Sgt. Goodwin; Privates Graupner, Luellen, McKee, Monaco, Schnepel and Vandenberg. The only newcomers to this list are Curly Prosser and Art Vandenberg. Curly, who has been with the McCann Erickson advertising agency in New York, is in the Air Corps and is stationed in Washington. Art was sworn in February 16 and was assigned to a medical training battalion in Va. He has been secretary to his father, Senator Vandenberg, for the past 8 years.

Roy Myers has been drafted, but due to his position as a professor at the University of Texas he has been deferred until July He was moved from Class 3A to 1A when he was divorced last year.

Chevrolet transferred Van Curll from Syracuse to Providence on December 1 three weeks later the automobile industry was closed. Van soon had several positions offered and chose one with Builders Iron Foundry, a. 122-year-old firm now making gun machinery Rick Rickenbaugh of the Cadillac division of General Motors is now in charge of the advertising and sales promotion departments, the personnel of which has been cut from 20 down to 4.

Gathered around the '28 table at the dinner of the New York Alumni Association at the Roosevelt on February 19 were: Baehr, Dodge, Harris, Kruming, Myles, Lane, Nova, Rockhill, Schnepel and yours truly. Schnepel had just received notice to return to active duty in the Army February 23 after having been out of uniform since September Ted Baehr (movie name Robert Tex Allen), and wife and child are staying in New York while Ted is busy with radio work and commercial movies. He came East to play the lead opposite Miriam Hopkins in a revival of "Design for Living" but she cancelled the contract. .... Bill Harris had just moved to New York from Boston in order to carry out his job as liaison officer of the Inter-American Affairs Committee in charge of all shortwave broadcasts to Latin America. He returned in December from a two-months trip to S. A. and spent three days with the Dana Condons in San Jose, Costa Rica. Bill says the United Fruit Co. was about to announce Dana's appointment as regional supervisor for Central America when the war interfered.

Bill Embler has been appointed Director of Public Information of the Citizens Public Expenditure Survey at Albany. He has been managing editor of the Middletown (N. Y.) Times Herald for the past five years. In 1939 he wrote a book, "Peter and Paul," which won commendation as the most exhaustive study of the central school system in New York State.

Bob Grey was appointed superintendent of the Shirley (Mass.) Industrial School for Boys on February i. Under his direction a personnel of 100 trained men and women work with the delinquent boys whose number at the present time totals 230.

The engagement of Collie Weeks and Miss Dorothy Scott of New York, was announced February 1. The wedding will take place in May. Miss Scott attended the Foxwood School and the Gaines Business School. Collie is with the Spool Thread Co. in New York.

Jerry and Mae Pitts join the large family. group with a third son, Robert McGregor, born September 29, 1941

Dave Menard, still doing chemical research for the Mellon Institute, has moved to 22 Greenwood Ave., Wheeling, West Virginia Ed Purnell is a salesman for the Alemite Sales Co., Chicago Dusty Griffin is in the sales department of Curtiss Wright Corp. in Columbus, Ohio Sam Sammis is Superintendent of a U. S. Rubber Co. plant in Des Moines, lowa, which is turning out war products. Sam and his family are living at 718 34th St., Des Moines.

This issue marks the opening of the Alumni Fund campaign. Under the leadership of Craw Pollock, our new Class Agent. Twenty-Eight is again aiming for its usual place at the top of the list of all "younger" classes. We will miss Paul Kruming, whose leadership for the past two years culminated last year with a 100% record in the matter of contributors, the largest and youngest class to achieve that mark. Paul resigned because of urgent business reasons. Craw was appointed by the Executive Committee of the Class and deserves a big Wah-Hoo-Wah for his willingness to accept the responsibility and work involved. Help him and his over-worked committee by sending your check to him or to Hanover NOW.

Fund Contributors for 1941

Contributors: 400 (100% of graduates). Total gifts: $2,986. PAUL R. KRUMING, Class Agent.
