The reaction to our birthday cards continues to be enthusiastic. So many of you are surprised at being remembered and of course we are delighted when you find the time to write us. We had a card from BudMcKenney a few days ago thanking us and adding that he had not seen any '28ers at his Theatre of the Sea, at Islamorada just south of Miami, during the past year. From reading the class notes he gathered that everyone had gone to Europe.
Those of you who still slave five or six days a week must occasionally wonder how our retired classmates feel about retirement. If you wonder what it will be like, harken to these words of wisdom from Sherm Baketel, retired Captain in the Coast Guard:
"You asked last summer for comment on retirement and I had to answer that at that time I was too new at the job to make any remarks. While the first bloom is off, I am tin entirely happy with my retirement, both as to location and activities of my own making One thing I have found out though: I keep something ahead all the time that reauires action on my part. Thus I always have something to shoot for, even though I may postpone action. For example, I have just finished painting a bathroom. This is a job left over from the remodeling done last summer. Next, when the spirit moves, will be a paint job in the upstairs hall This may sound like a stupid way of life but without some objectives, even as trivial as painting, you could rot pretty fast. So much for philosophy!
"Sorry to have missed the Class get-together on 12 October. I did make the Bucknell game and saw Hanover for the first time in years. Looks new, but I felt quite
Jack and Pearl Phelan's daughter, Martha McHenry, presented them with a third grandchild December 10 in Grand Canyon, Ariz. — the Village, that is — where her husband is Park Naturalist. Jack and Pearl were there and stayed over Christmas. Jack '63. now teaching English at Salisbury School and coaching the JV hockey team, joined them for Christmas. When Jack and Pearl drove to Phoenix to meet young Jack at the airport, they spent the night with Ellie and Nellie Jones at their beautiful home at Cave Creek, 30 miles north of Phoenix. In the morning they watched 40 or 50 desert quail feeding right on Ellie s patio outside the glass wall.
