A recent week-end trip to Boston away from my duties as a good influence, prompts the thought that not only may the United States be getting soft but that definitely the class of 1938 is getting fat. Latest nominees for a possible avoirdupois club would include Jack Donovan, now with the Army, Francis X. Reilly, whose married life definitely agrees with him along the culinary line, Parker Brownell, for much the same reason, and the redoubtable Mattimore, who hasn't been seen since a memorable week-end on the Emerson farm last summer.

Lamby Mercer, whom I saw in Chicago last Christmas vacation, hasn't benefitted particularly from the standpoint of weight since graduation almost four years ago, is still lean and hard. He reports all going well in that sector. "Moice" proved a very charming host at his historic home in Elgin but failed dismally to keep track of train schedules, which is the least anyone can expect who drops in on an unfamiliar section of the country.

The dog-team brought in a letter last week from Jim Chandler, late of Gulf Oil, now of the U. S. Navy, announcing the forthcoming marriage of his now corpulent self to Virginia Wells, Colby '39 of Waban, Mass. on June 20. Prospective ushers, if the national emergency doesn't interfere seriously include Cheese Hull, now at Bangor, Maine; Egelhoff, who is also getting heavy; Howie Casler; Herm Holt; and the undersigned if Uncle Sam doesn't nab him in the meantime.

Chuck Blumenauer also deserts the ranks of men of taste and breeding by announcing his engagement to Louise Jordan, Wellesley 1940. F. Xavier Reilly and Robert Emmett Foley will help this one run off smoothly in Worcester. Herb Rathbun writes to say that on March 16th he was married at Westerly, R. I. to Clara Margaret Morley, a graduate of the University of Chicago. Herb's address is 16 Broad Street, Westerly, and he will continue to plague prospective insurance buyers until the Army gets him.

Frank Brett volunteered for the Army a couple of weeks ago and after having a two-hour furlough to buy toothpaste, as if he ever needed it with those pearly Connecticut General teeth, was shipped off to Louisiana, where reports have .it he has made contact in a general engagement with Johnny Jameson and wife. Bud Hanley is in Washington working for the same slave-drivers as before,—Clark Tructractor Cos. Buck and McChesney are reported in Fort Sill, Oklahoma by private Jim Hastings, late of Chicago and formerly of Etna ridge-pole fame. "Gargantua" was drafted a short time ago after graduation last June from Harvard Law. Harry, the sage, Conner is at New River, South Carolina with the Marine Corps and Dan Marshall.

From one coach to another, congratulations to Butch Seidenstuecker on his state championship basketball team at Conway, N. H. Runner-up two years in a row, Butch finally pushed through this year for the title. Private James Golden Jr. is now with the 4th Regiment, Cos. 8., Fort McClellan, Alabama.

Von Pechmann reports that he graduates March 27 from officers training at Ft. Benning. Other 'gB's there include the suetfactory Dick Francis formerly of Cochituate and Moe Hamilburg's in Boston, Bud Fox, runner-up in the class elections senior year, and Lew Williams, all of whom have started in a new class. More ninety-day wonders for the Army! Incidentally what was Keresey's picture doing in Look Mag., dancing with a beauteous babe?

Bill Main is now manager of a Gulf Station in Boston, following in the illustrious footsteps of Chandler, Christiansen, Badger, at al. in what is now being referred to as "Dartmouth Graduate School Oil Company Inc." Sergeant Fred Baker is at Williams Field, Higley (Chandler), Arizona.

Cherubic Mattimore favored the writer with some choice little items written on the back of a filing card and sent postagedue, for which thanks. "Saw Hobie Rockwell the other day—he dropped in at the Club." Exit Rockwell in a cloud of smoke. Gordon Mac Meekin is working in Patterson at Wright Aeronautical. Jim Tompkins after over a year in the Army got his ist Class Private's stripe. Cardozo is now in the Army. Mattimore is trying to get a waiver on his eyes for the Navy, how about the rest of him, as I remember it didn't look too sharp draped in a sheet or something like that at the farm last summer.

Hans Barber and Charlene Mathis of Elkhart, Indiana were married in New York. 1938's present included Mr. and Mrs. Frank Newman, Mrs. Howard Van Riper (the boss was at sea with the Navy), George Reynolds and Johnny Nassikas. Mrs. Barber is University of Michigan School of Nursing 1939, couple living at 100 Haven Ave., N. Y. C.

Any news that you may have that you can slip through the censor should be sent to the Dartmouth Club of New York, marked Class of 1938. We had a fair crop of letters this month so let's see if each and every one of us can't take a week off and write a little essay, not more than 20,000 words on what he has been doing to improve each shining hour. In case you haven't already done so, how about sending your Alumni Fund contribution along NOW?

STUDENT FIRE FIGHTERS: 1937 A while back we mentioned that Mutt Ray was Captain—the rest of the '37s in this bunchare; (left to right) Jack Williams, Johnny Handrahan, Dave Camerer, Gordon Bennett,Latta McCray, Mutt Ray. The balance are their slaves from the young classes.
