At the recent New York dinner, it was felt by those present that the campaign for the 25-Year Gift would be a lot less painful if we could get started immediately, rather than wait until after the 20th Reunion. In accordance with the discussion, Bud Walls is going to get busy with the first mailing in the near future, and you will receive more detailed information as to plans.
Naturally enough, there is no feeling that the ideas expressed by a limited number of operatives should determine the policy of the Class as a whole. If you have any ideas not included by Bud, be sure to let him know. The job is a tremendous one and is going to take extra effort by every member of 1938. Bear in mind in your thinking on the subject, that it cannot be allowed to interfere with the annual Alumni Fund drive; to which Scotty is dedicated to retrieve 1938's leadership.
This month's news reports largely feature the findings of Hal Berman on his recent trip to the Soviet Union. Having taught during the summer at Salzburg, Hal journeyed from there to Moscow where he was fortunate enough to meet leaders of the legal profession of Russia. Briefly summarized, he found a general relaxation of secret police methods, including the abolition of the MVD special boards of three, "which could be the most important single change since Stalin's death." He attributes much of the relaxation to the "Geneva Spirit."
If you have not kept track of Hal's career since leaving The Dartmouth and Hanover Plain, he teaches at the Harvard Law School, - Russian law, torts, and international trade. He is the author of five books and four children.
Going back to New York, Dick Woodman is now in circulation after a long and arduous illness; he is looking fine but not yet back in the grind of business. He is hopeful of settling back into the old routine and reestablishing his home life after the ordeal. Dick, if you remember, was noted for being the only member of the Class "stretched" to make Navy requirements back in the old days of the Boston Picnic Committee.
The group of faithfuls who gathered at the Dartmouth Club included: Scotford, Gorman, Walls, Duckworth, Herrick, Soule, Colton, Woodman, Feakins, Brownell, Lynch, Rasmussen, Kindergan, Southworth, Jones, Koeppel, Ammarrell. The usual lottery and offering was made for the Memorial Fund, this time a double-take with Gorman and Woodman competing in "smellies."
The Medford (Mass.) Mercury in its high school column reports among the new teachers, one Jim Cuffee, teaching aviation. Since the last word this department had of him in the directory was "At Harvard Law School," this represents much more definite news, but what happened in the meantime? The paper laconically adds only, "Is a graduate of Dartmouth College, University of St. Louis, and Parks Air College, and taught in Lynn."
While still on the subject of St. Louis, no word has been officially received from EdGrace, as requested in the October notes. One further bit of information has come to light through very devious channels, to say the least. Which is that the young lady now duly espoused to the pride of Webster Groves is a chiropractor in her own right. Eventually, I hope, we can fill in the proper details of the latest 1938 nuptial. Incidentally, there has been too long a time since the other two members of the triumvirate, Harty and Cravens, have been heard from.
Stearns MacNutt is about to depart for foreign adventures, Barcelona being a prime destination. No doubt Hitchcock could give him some good tips, since Charley seems to be the most Spanish-versed of the class. Fashionplate Brett, awaiting his Lt. Colonelcy, attended the recent Boston luncheon.
Outside the Bowl on a gloomy day footballwise but a spring-like day weather-wise, there seemed a strange paucity of 19385. The only ones I ran into near Portal 30 were Gorman and Bud Lynch. I had hoped to get to Columbia for the deciding game of the cellar of the League, but social obligations here at School prevented. With the weather what it was probably it would have been a less-than-rewarding trip in every way.
Well, thank goodness the MAGAZINE requests a shorter-than-usual spread this month due to the Alumni Fund lists. A happy holiday season to you all.
