With our production effort moving less jerkily along and with red meat at a premium the country over, we turn to an item of no less importance to the future of the nation or to the safety of freedom .... that item is the Dartmouth Alumni Fund. Off to a running start with the first 1940 Indian Drum already received, we look forward to the finishing bell with the strong hope that 1940 will once again wind up in pay dirt as we did in last year's Fund campaign. Let's get behind Jack Rourke and the College and contribute early and generously. The time is n0w.... the amount is all you can spare, plus your recent gambling winnings. Incidentally, Jack Rourke has taken over the new task of narrating Paramount Newsreels. He can be heard describing certain current news items at your local cinemas.
Class news filtered in this month from parents, wives, brothers and '40 men. We need many more pictures of the class, so if any snapshots are lying around, don't hesitate to send them in with a short letter or note. Hope to hear from you all.
Mrs. Don Tenney writes from Norfolk, Va., and informs us that they became the proud parents of Donn Alan Tenney on Feb. 26. Unfortunately, father Don was unable to witness the great event for he has been stationed on an island in the South Pacific since September, 1942. Don is a captain in the Marine Corps. Bob Lake is an ensign in the Navy and is now taking his training at "Prairie State." Walter P. Goodrich, better known as "Goody," is now serving in the Maritime Service, apparently on our transports plying the routes to the battle zones.
Lt. Robert W. Armstrong is a member of the Parachute troops. A welcome letter from Bob's brother informs us that Bob was married to Miss Mary O. Kneass of Boylston, Mass., at Fayettville, N. C., while he was stationed at Fort Bragg. "A few weeks later Bob left for unknown parts. Nothing was heard from him for quite a while, and then letters started coming from the West coast. An Army cable arrived saying Bob was somewhere in Australia. As far as we know, he is still there." Second Lt. Chester Garrison is also in the Paratroops—location unknown.
A newsy letter from Lt. John L. Cowan shows him to be on the staff and faculty of the Army Finance School at Duke University. "Kieth Benson is also on the staff with me and although the news is late, he married Miss Jean Sprague of Shaker H'ts., Ohio, in the Duke Chapel last Fall." Hank Dahl went through the O.C.S. and Clem Burnap is now a student in one of Jack's classes. Jack states that Norb Hamilton is a It. with the 78th Division at Camp Butner, and that Ray Helm left the U. S. early this year for a northern base. Ray is working with Northeast Airlines.
Jack Little dropped in the other day for a short beer and is a corp. working for the War Department. Bob Hartman is a It. (jg) in the Navy and is aboard a ship in the Pacific. John F. McDonald is a private at Camp Upton. Lewis Holmes is working at Wright Aeronautical in Paterson, N. J. A letter from Chuck Wilde's father states that Chuck is a It. serving with the Army Medical Detachment in Africa. Chuck was sent to Africa in June, 1942, and was stationed in the jungles of Liberia for many months but has now been moved to Headquarters Service of Supply at another location. He is a parithologist and working on malaria control.
First Lt. Les Nichols writes that after spending two years on maneuvers, he is now helping to write Armored Force Training Films. Les expects to be made a Captain soon but more important, plans to marry Miss Dorothy Brimer from Louisville, Ky., around May 1. Other marriage news: William R. Watson was married March 6 to Miss Ruth Eleanor Gordon of Verona, N. J. Bill is a captain in the Marine Corps and returned shortly before his marriage from Guadalcanal. Bill volunteered in Sept., 1940, and took his training at Quantico, Va.
