This month comes a letter from another far distant member of the class of '44, Johnny Morse. He wrote from Seattle, but is, by now, probably in Alaska. Quoting from his letter, "Last August Pan-American Airways System sent me to South America as a Junior Airport Manager for Panair to Brazil.... asked for and was given a transfer to the Alaskan division of Pan-American. I am here in Seattle now, due to go North to parts unknown shortly."
John Mulliken and Fred Mills are both lieutenants in the cavalry and stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas Dick Smith, who used to be all over the campus taking pictures, writes that he is slowly being tortured to death at Ga. Preflight 5ch001.... that Karl Michael gave him the swimming test when he first arrived. Must have been a familar note Dale Brougher has been considerably set back in his Air Corps training by a hernia operation, but is all ready to go ahead now Another in the postoperative stage is Homer Bogart, recovering from an appendix removal. He is in Army Ordnance, stationed at Camp Santa Anita, Calif.
Lt. Cy Thompson is now stationed at Camp Ritchie, Md., after training at Fort Benning Jim Hays, former goalie on the hockey team, is at Chapel Hill, rooming with Johnny Lesher, and says that Don Holmes is just one door down the hall from them. Dan Donovan is also at Chapel Hill. .... When last heard from Kirk Bassett was in limited service at Camp McCoy, Wis., and praying for reclassification to general service. He also sends word that Pete Schaub is in' the Coast Guard, stationed in the vicinity of Groton, Conn., and that Bob Murphy is a navigator on a "Flying Fortress," and when last heard from was in California, having just completed a quick trip to Africa and back.
Don Maxwell-Smith informs us that he is at present working for TIME INC., after stretches in the Navy and Army (honorable discharges from both, due to seeing double) and a job on the N. Y. Daily News. He is married to the former Winkie Van Lennep of Philadelphia.
From Jim Elliot comes a huge letter telling about his transformation from a private to a 2nd It. and what has transpired since. He's stationed in Boston in the Chemical Warfare Dept. and frequents the Statler quite regularly, in case any of you are in that direction Jack Jenness, former sports writer on the Dartmouth, is, at this writing, at Atlantic City awaiting shipment to Meteorology B school. He says that Dick Hull was hit with a second siege of pneumonia less than two weeks after being called to active duty by the AAC, but that he's O.K. now and being shipped out to Pre-Flight. Jack also reports that Jack Haffenreffer, in the Air Corps ground crew, is recovering from pneumonia. Best wishes to both for a quick recovery.
Dick Oakley is in the midst of primary flight training at Camden, Ark John Murphy is training to be a bombardier and is stationed somewhere in Texas Art Saul is in the Army at Miami. He ran into Meryll Frost down there.
The Dartmouth Navy Air Squadron is so scattered now that it is difficult to have any up-to-date news on them, but here is what some of them were doing at last report: Russ Isner, John Macdonald, and Pete Bruch were still at Jacksonville, Fla.; Ed. Roewer (whereabouts a military secret, but rumored that he is in Brazil); and Jack Riley instructing at Atlanta, Ga., itching to get more action but finding the Georgia beauties very enjoyable Bill Abrams, who got his picture in Life with an Indian haircut, is now a bombardier and is on overseas duty, whereabouts unknown Murray Mondschein is among the number of Dartmouth men in the ski troops, stationed at Camp Hale, Colorado. He is a corporal.
Your secretary saw Bud Troxell, two-time president of the class of '44, at the Ivy League track championships, in which Trox was throwing the hammer for Army.
