Of great interest to all followers of Big Green teams was the appointment of Earl M. Brown as head coach of varsity football and basketball. Coach Brown succeeds "Tuss" McLaughry, now a Major in the Marines, as head gridiron mentor, and Lt. Ossie Cowles, now with the Naval Reserve, as coach of Dartmouth basketball teams.
Brown comes to Dartmouth from Harvard where he was end coach of varsity football, and head coach of varsity basketball. Before going to Harvard, he served under "Tuss" McLaughry for two seasons at Brown University. A graduate of Notre Dame in 1939, Brown starred in both football and basketball for "the Fighting Irish" and in 1939 played end on the College All Star team in Chicago.
Milton J. Piepul, Notre Dame captain and fullback in 1940, will also join the Dartmouth coaching staff as backfield coach this season. Piepul was varsity full- back for three years, and was named to several All-American elevens in 1939 and 1940. He and Earl Brown played together on the 1938 team at South Bend. After graduating from Notre Dame in 1941 Piepul played with the College All-Stars and then joined the Detroit Lions in the National Professional Football League. Last year he was coach of football at Cathedral High School of Indianapolis, Indiana. It has also been announced that John Dell Isola will return to Dartmouth as line coach of the Big Green squad this fall. Dell Isola served in that capacity under McLaughry last fall, and before that held the same post with the freshman eleven. He joined the Dartmouth coaching staff two years ago, after seven years of professional football with the New York Giants following graduation from Fordham in 1934.
In addition to Piepul and Dell Isola, head coach Brown will probably have the assistance of several chief specialists, all former football coaches, now attached to the V-12 unit as physical training instructors.
Regular varsity football practice got under way officially on Monday, July 26. With a wealth of material in the V-12 school, including many outstanding athletes from other colleges, football prospects for the Indians are the brightest in several years.
EARL BROWN, new head coach of Dartmouth football, is looking forward to an interesting season with a mixed civilian and V-12 squad.
