Henry Austin, our ever faithful correspondent and class treasurer, who, with his wife, has been marooned in Florida for lack of rail transportation home, writes most happily, even exuberantly that everything is set for their start northward on May 15. He hopes to reach his summer home at Webster, N. H., in time to plant his garden, put in his other crops and turn out his stock to pasture. It has been an anxious time for him and we trust his hopes will be joyfully realized. He has been a very interested witness of a Florida political campaign which apparently takes the form of a joint appearance on one platform of the various candidates, where each one extolls his own superior qualifications for the particular office; Henry describes it as the best free entertainment he ever attended. He regards the best argument was made by the candidate for the Mosquito Control Board, (salary $l200 per year), his argument being that he "had provided room and board to mosquitos for 68 years, a longer period than any other aspirant."— For the comfort of the inhabitants our hopes are for the success of the "mosquito exterminator."
A few weeks ago the secretary received a very enjoyable office call from Fred Howland '87. Our acquaintance antedates Dartmouth by several years, going back to 1878-9, when we had the rare privilege, with other day pupils, of being students at The Montebello Institute at Newbury, Vt.—that was during our adolescent period when we were known as "Master" instead of "Mr." Those same characteristics of geniality, keen sense of humor and native ability where then prominent, which, with the years, have carried him so far and so high in professional, business and social successes, but his accumulated and deserved honors have not changed him as a most enjoyable guest and companion. We reminisced and made some comparative mutual measurings, in which he naturally and properly excelled. The secretary believes that before the 8th of June he will have news from several members of the class who have not written as frequently as we all wished they had.
