News has come through that John T. Merrill is a 2nd Lieut, and Eggie Cabbie has attained the rank of captain. Claude Clark mails a note from the U.S.S. John R. He managed to attend a monthly meeting of Dartmouth men held there. Paul Urion '38 was the closest '37 came to having two representatives at the meeting Bill Heroy likes his new job with the Geotechnical Corporation in Dallas, where he moved after spending four years as a geologist for the Texas Co. His work as a geologist and geophysicist involves contract geophysical exploration, known to the trade as "doodlebugging." He, in company with many of the rest of us, had to buy a house as people seemed reluctant to rent to folks with "three wild young," as Bill calls them.
Dave Todd's father writes that Dave is in Korea with an, Enemy Equipment Intelligence Service Team Hall Putnam's fine dispatches have caused much favorable comment among readers of the Boston Globe. As Victory Forum Editor, before he left for the service Hal had the most wide-awake source for any and all information relating to service men and their problems. When Hal last dropped a personal note he said he was sitting listlessly on the hook in Manila Bay waiting departure to Okinawa. Since then he is gone into Japan as Armed Guard Officer on the S.S. George Durant with a cargo of occupation forces Lester Garvin comments that his inability to keep track of his Class Dues obligation puts him in a pretty poor light as a banker. He writes from the National City Bank Branch at Buenos Aires. His last trip to Hanover was in September, 1943, and he's looking forward to the big Tenth. City Bank will owe Les four months' furlough in 1947 and he plans to be in Hanover to take in the festivities. The Garvins had a future .Dartmouth man added to the family a few months ago. That makes it a girl and a boy for Les and his wife Ralph Griffiths was discharged at Camp Haan in California early in November and headed straight for Providence. Ralph's wife did a splendid job in locating a place to live and they can be reached at 28 Glendale Ave. in Providence. Ralph's line is manufacturing a line of jewelry FredKlein's father lets us know of Fred's discharge and forwards Fred's record of three years in the Marine Air Corps. It includes 63 missions, a Distinguished Flying Cross and plenty of action. His new wife, the former Patricia Judd of Los Angeles and Fred are now residing at 4 Delavan Terrace, Yonkers, N. Y.
Florence Areson drops a note for Bob with a check for Class dues and also a contribution for the Class Memorial Fund in the name of Jo Wolfe. Bob was at Okinawa, completely washed out by the last of the typhoons. He was recently made a lieutenant commander. Bob's hoping for an earlier return stateside, but sees no immediate prospects says Florence. ....Bill Bell reports his willingness to help out with class meetings with Winter and reports the sugar business has Army life beat a mile. He called on the F. H. Liggett Co. in N. Y. C. to sell some sugar and found JuliusVainano doing the purchasing. It sounds like an order to me. He says Mort Berkowitz is at his old haunts and we'll probably all know it as soon as the Alumni Fund Drive gets rolling We ought to have a meeting this winter wherever there are two '37ers or more to meet. The feasibility of a class Memorial Fund and what form it should take needs some discussion. We need a Reunion chairman and a committee. Also a thorough discussion of Reunion plans. Write to the Secretary concerning the possibilities of a Reunion in your area.
Bob Aylward is back from India and is planning to be married soon. He spent several days in Hanover in late November..... ShelWagner and his wife also showed up at the Hanover Inn in early December for a welcome holiday Furman Stanley writes that he is no longer a lieutenant. Twenty-two months in Europe as a staff officer with Gen. Hodges' First Army in the Signal Section of the Army Hq. are now behind him. He says that there were a few exciting times but that most of it was long arduous work, 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's really good to be back says Stan. .. ..
