Carl Gram, varsity secretary until his resignation September 30, informed you last month that your present correspondent would attempt to fill the breach Carl vacated. He did a grand job and I know he worked under considerable harassment at times since I have variously received letters from Naples and a Coast-bound air plane when Carl was fighting a deadline. I trust that I shall fulfill the balance of Carl's term to the satisfaction of the Class.

As you can appreciate, the Class Notes are primarily a vehicle for recording current history. You fellows make the history; I will record it for the interest of all. But please do not be bashful about reporting to me the big and little things that happen in your lives; they are important to more people than you would imagine. Taking a minor liberty with a Time head, we should be able to start each each issue of the Notes like this: "Names make news. Last month these names made this news." For my part, I have armed myself with a borrowed Aegis, mine having gone astray in Lima, Peru, quite a few years ago. I shall make an effort to communicate with as many as possible to keep news coming in. With this preamble, let's see what the news is this month.

Since there has been a complete paucity of direct communications in the current file, I got a few notes off and was rewarded with a welcome letter from John Milne. As you know both John and Corb Moister are regular staff MD's at Hitchcock Clinic, specializing in internal medicine. Corb was off on a shooting trip (Hungarian partridge) on Prince Edward Island —an alternate to a summer vacation. John and his family are well and looking forward at some distant date to a repeat of their Wyoming safari which Jeanne wrote up (you may remember) for the Saturday EveningPost.

As an ex-manager of the Smalley Club, I was delighted to learn from John that MaSmalley at age 77 is still a remarkably active woman, and that despite many problems over a good many years.

I saw Dave Taylor several weeks ago and can report that he is numbered among those Connecticut residents who did not sufFer flood damage. When I talked with him he was on his way home to help a neighbor pump out his cellar. You Californians would appreciate some of the rainfall we have had around these parts since August. Those Los Angeles hills would be a luscious green.

Sunday, after the Yale game, I was rudely awakened at 10 a.m. by a call from nearneighbor Matt Ray, who asked me to drop over to see Bill and Nancy Cash who took in the game and weekended with the Rays. We had a pleasant chat over a magnum of Champagne that Matt broke out before the Cashews shoved off for a luncheon date - again in the pouring rain.

Don Miller, another Chappaqua resident (Bill White is also), was in Chicago recently attending a meeting of the Audit Bureau of Circulation. He tells me he saw Ed Davis, circulation manager of Newsweek, at the gathering. We have word that Johnny Handrahan was married on October 22 to Miss Jane M. Cusick of Weston, Mass. Brothers Arthur and Bill were best man and usher, respectively.

I have a clip from the Milwaukee Sentinel announcing the appointment of Ray Hauschel as export manager of the J. I. Case Company of Racine. Ray joined Case in 1938 and has traveled extensively for the export department. He was in Rosario, Argentina, when our '53 directory was published.

Ben Cardozo has been named to the committee on round table conferences by the As- sociation of the Bar of the City of New York. I note also that Ben and his wife were Hanover Inn visitors the weekend of September 24. Gail Compton has joined Gottschaldt & Associates, Inc., Miami, Fla., advertising agency. Gail has had extensive radio and TV experience. Prior to that he was with the Chicago Trib, his last assignment there being farm editor, as I recall.

Lots of radio and TV news this month. EdRyan was named director of news and public affairs of WTOP radio and TV, outlet of the Washington Post and Times-Herald. This happened on October 10. Then I have a note that Bill Leonard was guest speaker at the opening meeting in October of the College Club, White Plains, N. Y.

The fall number of Forest Notes, New Hampshire's conservation magazine, contains the announcement that Will Brown has been appointed ass't forester of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. His new address is 125 School St., Concord, N. H.

Our political item for the month tells us that Rep. Hal Putnam urged the creation of a regional planning board and industrial development commission for Neponset Valley towns, in a meeting with the Norwòd, Mass., Chamber of Commerce. I don't know whether this means Hal was standing for reelection November 8 or not!

The Hanover Inn reports these '37 fall visitors: Jim Otis and Dr. Bill Mauran.
