Parker Brownell '38 spent some time at Newport, R. 1., with Ken Stearns, the Navy medico, and tells us that Ken is due for a discharge any day. Also Parker spent considerable time with Art Sloggett in touring the territory around Newport Decommissioning Center. Y., and Dr. Bill Thomas back in Boston at 270 Brookline Ave Major and Mrs. Tom McIntyre, Former Naval Lt. and Mrs. DickCooper and Capt. and Mrs. Bill Newburger all showed up about the same time in late January Art Guyer, now overseas with U.N. R.R.A. addressed a special assembly of Hanover High School on international affairs before his departure Dr. Mike Petti's promotion at Shoemaker, Calif., to lieutenant commander will probably be the climax of his Naval career inasmuch as he's due for discharge in a month. He was at the Admiralty Islands and Guam, being with the first landing forces at Bougainville and Okinawa. Both he and his bride, the former Dr. Helen Thompson of Cleveland, Ohio, interned at the Lakeside Hospital in Cleveland. Mrs. Petti conducted a medical practice in Cleveland while Mike was away. Something we never knew before: Mike was president of his class at U. of Penn. Medical School and also President of the Undergraduate Medical Association when he graduated five years ago.
Bill Mauran manages to spend several days at the Hanover Inn every month as he goes through on business Butch Nichols was recently interviewed by his hometown newspaper upon his teturn from the service. His berth as head of the History Department at Gilbert High in Winstead, Conn., "seems like paradise," said Dave. He's seen active service in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. Butch's views on the general world situation according to the Winstead Citizen is that the common solution of world problems is with the U.N.O. He believes much can be done through education and seeing how the other half lives. The crowded condition of Japan with 75,000,000 people in a small area demands an answer and territorial expansion must arise. Butch summed it up: "We must recognize the problems of the defeated as well as those of ourselves and our allies." .... Major Bill Geraghty got over to Hanover from Ticonderoga. Also Lt. Comdr. and Mrs. DougButnam spent a few days at the Inn in Hanover in late January Dayton Morgan was recently transferred from the Fiscal Division at the Springfield Arsenal to Fort Devens for terminal leave and discharge. The Captain was inducted in 1'941, made a second lieutenant at Fort Sill and served at the Arsenal until now. His two years at Columbia Graduate School of accounting made him quite essential at Springfield Capt. HarrySchultz who spent so much time in German prison camps was recently married at Cleveland to the former Mary Ermina Clark of Smith College and Cleveland. Harry spent two weeks of his honeymoon at the Hanover Inn John Doukas' unit, the 100 th Station Complement Squadron, commanded by John was awarded the Meritorious Service placque for performance of difficult tasks, and general superiority. John has accumulated Bronze Star Medal, the E. T. O. ribbon and four battle stars. John spent several years at both Keene Teachers and the U. of N. H. following graduation in 1937, and was employed as a teacher by the N. H. State Dept. of Education prior to entering the service Both Fred Klein and Dr. Corb Moister and wives managed a recent holiday in Hanover Bob Aylward was married March 2 to Margaret Fayerweather in New Lebanon, N. Y. Margaret, a graduate of Simmons College of Social work, has been a case worker with the Family Society of Boston. Bob is attending the George Washington University School of Government in Washington. "It seems like a good set-up and I enjoy it although I sometimes feel my extreme age when I look at some of the applecheeked sophomores. When I applied for my marriage license, I felt a little foolish giving my occupation as 'student'; it sounded like retarded development and I'm not too sure it isn't. At present my life consists of three hours each week of Asiatic Geography, Developments of Nationalism, Far Eastern Contemporary Politics, and Chinese. The latter staggers me occasionally but gets to be less involved and complex every lesson."
News has been received that Uri Muriro, missing over a year, has been presumed dead by the Navy Department. It is a sad loss of a truly brilliant classmate, and a tribute will appear in the In Memoriam section MortBerkowilz is tearing into the Alumni Fund Campaign with all the old vigor.
