On January 21, 1946, Bill Williams was the recipient of the Selective Service medal and citation issued under Act of Congress. Bill was certainly entitled to this honor from the fine work he has done as a member of the Selective Service Board. His work in this connection has covered World War I and World War 11. He was appointed a member of the Local Board Division, State of Massachusetts, on June 21, 1917, and was elected chairman by the members of the Board. On January 15, 1919, Gov. Calvin Coolidge appointed him Chief Inspector of the Local Boards within the jurisdiction of District Board No. 2 for the purpose of examining and seeing that the records of the Boards were in proper shape for forwarding to Washington. On March 31, igig, he was relieved of all these duties. Between 700 and 800 men were inducted through the Board in the first World War. On October 17, 1940, he was again appointed a member of the Selective Service Board and again he was elected chairman. He has served continuously since that date, and during the last war this Board processed 2200 men. These duties were ih addition to Bill's services as Judge of the District Court in Millford. Bill says, "My general reaction has been that of being connected with a disagreeable duty but one which someone had to perform, and strange as it may seem, I now find that I still have a few friends left."
