THE SKIING THIS WINTER was enjoyed by a limited number, as far as accommodations in the Lodge of the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California was concerned. The snow was late at Donner Summit last fall, giving us ample time to complete our project by the first week of December. There were workparties nearly every weekend thruout the Fall, but some of the parties were not too heavily manned. Those to whom the most credit is due are Pete Talbot '38, Bill Danforth '41, Bob Allen '33, Jack Guenther '41, Ellis Jump '32, John Hanan '38 and Charlie Cusack '43, all of whom went up at least twice and some of them as many as eight or nine times.
By the time the foundation and floor were finished it was apparent there would not be time to build a timber structure for shelter before Winter arrived. So a Quonset Hut, which could be quickly erected, was purchasect and it was nearly finished when disaster overtook us early in December. A windstorm crashed a couple of trees growing some distance away onto the structure, demolishing most of it. This left us with the one alternative of rebuilding the least damaged portion of the hut, which we hoped would be adequate for eight or ten people—a sad substitute for what was intended to be ample for twenty.
Next summer we hope to have bigger, if not better, work parties to put up a substantial timber building on the deck built last year, and which remains practically undamaged. The corrugated sheets of the Quonset and the insulation will be salvaged for use on the roof of the new structure.
