THE TACKLES

Here we immediately encounter a situation completely opposite to that obtaining above. Tackles, in brief, are in extremely short supply. Heading the list is JonathanJenkins, playing his fourth year on the Dartmouth varsity. If we only had a half dozen like this one, things would be fundamentally sound. But Jenkins is the only tackle whose size (220 pounds), experience, and ferocity stamp him as completely equipped for Ivy League football as presently played,, When the strength tests required of all entering freshmen were given to Jenkins three years ago, he practically broke all the ropes. As a result he was marked as the strongest man to enter Dartmouth during the 15 years these records have been compiled. He dearly loves to fling the foe on their features and can be counted on to do just that during every game for as long as he can stand up. The other tackle berth will probably be held by a sophomore, Ted Eberle, who is an excellent prospect but naturally is a question mark before he has been seasoned by game experience. At 210 pounds, Eberle has the size and the drive to make him one to be heard from in the future. We trust the future will be this fall. If Dick Gowen were only 20 or 30 pounds heavier, many of John Dell Isola's tackle worries could be laid to rest, for this boy is a hard worker and is fast and aggressive in the bargain. But his 195 pounds, however valiantly employed, just aren't enough against opponents weighing from 225 to 250. In spite of this dearth of poundage, however, Gowen will perforce see a lot of action this fall. Bill Carpenter rounds out the list of seasoned tackle candidates. A letter winner last year as a sophomore, Bill will cast his 210 pounds into the breach time and again this fall, sometimes at tackle and possibly at guard. A teammate of Red Rowe's at Oak Park, Bill will be useful when the going gets rough. Finally, Joe Sardella may see action, provided he is instilled with some animal ferocity at the proper moments. Weighing 230 pounds, Joe is a formidable prospect if he ever becomes imbued with the overwhelming desire to tear the opposition limb from limb.
