Here's a review of Boston activities:
SEPTEMBER
The officers and executive committee held their first meeting of the fall on Thursday, Sept. 23, and discussed plans for the months of September through February as well as reviewed all the past monthly events scheduled during 1948. There has been one activity every month since February when the new officers took over. These activities have been varied both as to type and locale, so as to give as many alumni as possible a chance tp take part. Suburban clubs have played an important part in the success of many of the activities and so have Wilfred Smart '07 and his secretary in' the D.A.A. Office at 44 School Street.
FOOTBALL KICK-OFF DINNER
Over 600 Alumni of Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth gathered at the Harvard Club in Boston on September 27 for a "Cocktails and Chowder Kick-Off Dinner." There were plenty of cocktails and congeniality during the general get-together preceding the main event. About 8, "chow call" was sounded and an excellent meal was served consisting of Harvard Club secret recipe chowder, apple pie and coffee. Several lads had as many as five helpings of the chowder, it was that good .... or maybe they were that hungry.
"Swede" Nelson acted as master of ceremonies and did a swell job, using all new jokes, as he introduced head coaches McLaughry, Hickman of Yale and Valpey of Harvard in that order. Due to the fact that it was real early in the season, all three coaches seemed to be in unusually good spirits and very friendlily disposed towards one another. None made any rash predictions, but all made right fine speeches.
OCTOBER
Historically this has always been the big "Harvard-Dartmouth week-end" month in Boston. This year the D.A.A. of Boston made plans to entertain all members of the Dartmouth Family in New England in royal fashion by planning and organizing a terrific affair at the Copley Plaza Grand Ball Room and Foyer after the game. It was a "come one, come all" affair and have the time of your life. Here are a few excerpts from the publicity sent out to all Greater Boston alumni:
Why organize your own party after the game? We've done it for you.
Why not celebrate in real Dartmouth style? .... with fellow alumni at the Copley Plaza Grand Ball Room and Foyer, Saturday, October 23, 1948.
If it's a Dinner you want.... eat a hearty meal while listening to Boston's best dinner music.
If it's Dancing you want.... dance to the ever popular Marchard's orchestra.
If it's Singing you want.... join in with a glee club group.
If it's a Get-Together you want.... join in with your friends at one of the many available tables for a sociable evening. Bar open from 6:00 to 12:00 P.M. Dinner table reservations available for groups of 8 or more.
Notes: Official meeting at the bar for Saturday Night quarterbacks. Doors open at 6:00 P.M. for "Dutch Treat" cocktails. Dinner 8:00 to 9:00; dancing 9:00 to 12:00. Dress optional.
