Tom Ruggles, honcho of the photo exhibit for our 50th Reunion, has come up with a good idea. When you're cleaning out those closets, drawers, or what-have-you and come across photos of College days, many would be great for display (and/or our reunion book). So, send 'em to Tom: 626 Main St., Concord, MA 01742.

A question often asked: "How come it takes so long for obits to appear in the Alumni Magazine}" First, someone has to be notified: the College, the magazine, or me. The Alumni Records Office sends me a notice along with whatever is in their files such as old questionnaires, news clippings, etc. I write the obit from those records, from information from our class yearbook and the 25th Reunion book, and from a newspaper obit when available.

I send it to DAM and there's about a two-month lead before the magazine reaches you. So, we're talking about a process that takes three months at best. It can be expedited some by an early notification of a classmate's death and by someone's sending me a newspaper obit. Better still, if you'll write about a special friend, I can submit an obit that's more personal and "Dartmouth oriented."

Another honor to George Woodwell, founder and director of the Woods Hole (Mass.) Research Center. He received the 1996 Heinz Environmental Award, which carries a prize of $250,000, and the write-up says he embraces "the joyous American belief that individuals still have both the power and the responsibility to change the world for the better."

In his Tuck alumni magazine '51 column Ken Edelson writes about several classmates.

In retirement, Alex Hoffman is devoting his energies to fund and build a fine arts museum in southern Vermont.

Not so retiring, Walt and Ro Lindenthal are still busy consulting and running a sports-gear exporting business from Meriden, N.H.

Also "still working fulltime, not retired, must be doing something wrong" is Jay Urstadt in Bronxville, N.Y. Another retiree is Jim Gaylord, who lives in West Chester, Penn., and has "getaway abodes" on the Alabama Gulf Coast and in Maine.

Jack Van Zoeren, living in Pinehurst, N.C., plays a lot of golf and tennis.

Lastly, a personal note. Many thanks to those 'sos, and those in other classes, who wrote to praise my thinly disguised tribute to my wife in the recent issue devoted to the women of Dartmouth.

You know, that DAM issue sat around the house (always in a conspicuous spot) for two weeks before Barbara read it, and that was triggered by a note from Sifty Joe. Oh well....

Have a great summer!! And, plan to come up to the fall mini-reunion October 31-November 2.
