Mingled with the crowd at the Pennsylvania game in Philadelphia on October 2 were Andy Marshall and son Donald, Ike and Harriett Miller, Ted and Beth Robie.
Last April a daughter, Sally, was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Watts. That made grandparents out of Nick and Louise Carter, for the mother is the former Jane Carter. I have not set eyes on Nick since the blessed event so am unable to report at this writing whether or not he bears himself with the decorum expected of one who has reached that station in life. Nick's other daughter, Sally, for whom the baby was named, is in her junior year at Ohio Wesleyan University.
A particularly lovely affair was the wedding of Shirley Ann Hamilton, Vassar '47, and Walter James McNerney, Yale '47, at Christ Church, Hanover, on June 26. With Sally beaming her approval, Jim gave their daughter in marriage. The bride's sisters attended her, Joan as maid of honor and Cynthia as a bridesmaid.
During September and October, mostly at football weekends no doubt, the Hanover Inn counted the following among its guests: Killyand Betty Kilmarx of Hartsdale, N. Y.; Dickand Mary Litchfield of Wellesley, Mass.; Rayand Elena Millemann of Hollis Park Gardens, N. Y.; Steve and Reine Tredennick of Marblehead, Mass.; Duke and Fran Vosßurgh of West Hartford, Conn.
On September 11 in Bristol, Vt., Charles E.Townsend married Mrs. Pamela Mackay Johnstone. Charlie, formerly secretary of the Burlington (Vt.) Chamber of Commerce, now conducts an advertising agency. He and his bride will live in Westford, Vt.
You learned from one o£ Stan Miner's bulletins that the most distant contributor to the 1948 Alumni Fund was Don Donavanik. I know you will be interested in the letter Don wrote Stan from Bangkok on May 22:
'Dear Stan,
I have received your letter of 27 April and am glad to hear of our class. I asked a friend of mine in New Orleans to send you on my behalf dollars as a gift for our fund, herewith enclosed the copy of my letter to him.
I am delighted to learn that you are well and have three daughters already. As for me, I am well and have five children. Only my work as Minister of Finance keeps me too much busy.
Hoping to be once again to the States and see you and our classmates, I remain
Sincerely yours, Don"
It would be nice to see Don again. He had experiences in the war years that he probably has no desire to relive, but I'll wager his contagious good humor survived with him. To me the mention of his name brings nostalgic memories of our senior year picnic at which Don competed so vigorously in what came to be known as the International Diving Contest.
Engaged in the same general industry, I know something of Kirk Steen's accomplishments business-wise, and a letter from him furnished me the information on members of his immediate family. Holding the top position in the Interstate Bag Company, Walden, N. Y., manufacturer of paper shopping bags, Kirk has been very successful. In its specialized field, the Interstate Bag Company enjoys an enviable position. In 1927 Kirk married Pauline Nichols, a club champion golfer of Newburgh, N. Y. First came Harford Kirk Jr., now 19, who was graduated from Hill School, Pottstown, Pa., where he made letters in football and track, and is now a sophomore at Lafayette College where he earned freshman letters in cross country and track. Next came Barbara, now 17, who was graduated last June from St. Catherine's School, Richmond, Va., and is Colby Junior College, New London, N. H. Then came Marguerite, now 14, a club and city swimming champion, who is a freshman at Emma Willard School, Troy, N. Y.
Another class daughter at Colby Junior College is Gretchen Siegfried. Doubtless, Ozzy and Lucille will now be frequent visitors to Hanover.
Charles Maurice Lyon is a member of the Class of 1952 at Dartmouth. Al drove his son to Hanover and sort of wished he were doing the matriculating himself.
I conclude the class notes for the current year with the sincere wish that each of you will experience pleasure and peace at Christmas, happiness and prosperity in the New Year.
