Since the War, January is the month for examinations at Dartmouth. The cover of the January 1948 ALUMNI MAGAZINE shows an undergraduate rubbing the nose of the bust of Dean Laycock in the Baker Library, to insure good luck in his coming exams. This superstition or tradition has been in effect for many years and the Dean lived long enough to see it observed during his lifetime.
This bust was presented to Dartmouth by the Class of 1896 at one of its reunions and was duly accepted by the college by President Hopkins with appropriate ceremonies. The idea of a bust of our classmate was conceived by "Hike" Eldred. He selected the sculptress, Nancy Cox, arranged for many sittings, and saw that the pouring of the metal was satisfactorily done.
When the custom of rubbing the nose of his bust came to be widely observed, the Dean told your secretary that while continued friction injured the patina of the metal, still he felt honored to be considered to be a symbol of good luck.
