Just before Christmas we received a letter from Mrs. Gertrude K. Howard of Keene, N. H., Elbridge Kingbury's sister advising that she was administrix of his estate and she was sending $1000 to Hanover for the Class Memorial Fund. This thoughtful and generous action of Skeets' bequest continues his name as a memorial contributor to the Alumni Fund as long as the names of our class are printed. Later the college has unrestricted use of the money.
Mr. and Mrs., Pop and Arlene, Warren announce the marriage of Janet Carolyn to Mr. Alan Perine White, Princeton '39, on November 21, in Vienna, Austria. The Whites' address will be Headquarters U. S. Forces in Austria, N. S. Legation, APO 777, Postmaster, N. Y. City. Alan White has been in the State Department and is now vice consul at Vienna. You'll all remember Janet was with Pop at our last reunion. She majored in political science at Wellesley and upon graduation in '43 went to Washington and eventually into the Office of Strategic Services Harriet Warren, who attended Antioch and received her training in occupational therapy at Milwaukee-Downer, is in charge of the Occupational Therapy Dept. at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York John was discharged this last spring from Naval Aviation with rank of Ensign, and is now completing his college as a sophomore at Williams where he was during the V-12 program Pop is now importing tapioca from South America instead of Java and thus Minute Tapioca is back on the market and it means all-out production, for shelves were bare and the housewife "has missed this product more than any other." This statement might be considered advertising, but factual advertising. He is also producing a new product called Minute Rice. With the rice scarcity this will be welcome.
Bill English is back at his superintendent of Lebanon Public Schools' desk after a three months' sick leave. One month he spent in the hospital in Hanover where Harry French did a good job of restoring him to his "former condition or better." Bob Conant and FredPage dropped in to see him and Fred Hovey sent cards from Etna with stories of the bull moose seen in his neighborhood.
In The New York Tribune Magazine Section on Dec. 7 (and others we presume), HapAtwood was one of the "leading bankers commending Christmas Club Membership."
Young Doctor Dick Spillane is married—Mr. and Mrs. Charles Benjamin Hatch announced the marriage of their daughter Betty Jane to Dr. Richard Judd Spillane on Dec. 20. They will be at home in Philadelphia, at 3723 Spring Garden St.
The first of December, Frances Tysen Nutt,Yick's wife, had a book published by Stephen- Paul, N. Y.—Three Fields to Cross, a story of Stateii Island during the Revolutionary period. It is a fine story, well-written and worth your while. The jacket was designed by Ruth Tysen, Frances' sister, and is very attractive.
The secretary wishes to thank all who sent cards and messages at Christmas. The large number made a very happy Christmas for me and mine. One from far lands was from Maj.Harp Nolan, Commandant, Mid Pacific branch of U.5.A.F.1., otherwise known as the U. S. Armed Forces Institute. Irene was enjoying the balmy breezes at Waikiki—Address U.5.A.F.1., APO 963, c/o Postmaster, San Francisco, Cal Carl Shumway reported that the D.O.C. had built one log cabin last summer in the Swift Diamond in the College Grant, about 40 miles north of Berlin, N. H., besides taking over one at the junction of the Swift and Dead Diamonds Then the MattGatelys expect to get to Hanover next Junehow do they arrange to have Xmas cards reach here in time from Brazil? And poetically Helen and Ed Bufjum end their wishes with anticipation of Dartmouth in June While Howard "Stub" and Grace Stoughton look forward to the reunion from Madison, N. J but there are too many to continue. Thanks to all.
The reunion committee at present stands: George H. Knight, Chairman, Fred S. Page, Henry W. Merrill, Ray H. Ball, Harry T. French, Norm. B. Cotterall, Andy W. Comstock; ex-officio members: Robert O. Conant, John J. Remsen, Harry H. Semmes and Warde Wilkins. The program will be arranged to give as little time possible for scheduled events and to keep everything informal and on the campus again this year. The tent will be at the dorm and breakfasts will be served in it as well as the dinner Sunday noon. It will be most important, however, to send in the reservation card to the College as soon as_ they are received next spring. The dormitoiy will depend entirely on the response for reservations. Let's all be in one dorm this reunion.
Lt. Col. Tom Sullivan is out of the hospital and is at home, for good. He leaves the service with a high rank he acquired the hard way, working for it through long years.
Have you thought over the bequest you might make to Dartmouth through your class Memorial Fund? Any amount is welcome because of the importance of these class funds, both in augmenting the Alumni Fund and in strengthening the college endowments. While we started this fund, all classes graduating since ours have followed and many graduating before us have started their funds—many exceed ours in amount. Don't forget to give thought to this important matter and ask for any information you may need or desire.
John and Laura Remsen, with Mr. Remscn, were stuck in the snow during the big New York storm. They were returning from spending Christmas with John's sister in Jenkentown, Pa., and left there at noon with 4" of snow along in the afternoon. They landed in a snowdrift in Brooklyn at 10:30 and were taken in for the night by some good people. The following day made their way home by subway and on foot while John finally got the car into the garage on Monday afternoon.
