Mr. & Mrs. Rockwood S. Edwards were in Portland, Ore., in March for the announcement Rt. Rev. and Mrs. James W. F. Carman made at a tea in their home of the engagement of their daughter Catherine to Eddie's son Stephen W. Edwards. Miss Carman is a junior at the University of Oregon from which Stephen graduated in June.
Doc Willis is back home from another hospitalization. and at his office until early af- ternoon each clay. He was able to attend Sherm Saltmarshes' salmon luncheon at Pattens this year with the group of '14 '15 and a good sprinkling of '13ers.
Joseph P. "Jiggs" Donahue was written up in Sumpascoopies by Charles G. Sampas in the Lowell Evening Sun. "Barrister Donahue is a year-round baseball fan, and his love for the great American pastime dates back to the days at Dartmouth, when he was offered an opportunity to join the Major Leagues. After much heart-searching, Big Joe decided to follow in the steps of his illustrious father, the late Attorney Dan Donahue."
Ed Stiles wrote from Nelson, British Columbia,
"Phyl, my "wife and I spent two months in Austria skiing two years ago. We went back last summer with the intentions of staying in Austria until now but returned for Christmas after four pleasant months touring Denmark (to meet the in-laws of our oldest daughter Inez Rasmussen), then through Germany, back and forth in Austria, a little of Switzerland, Merans, Italy, a month in Innsbruck where I got one day skiing.
"Our oldest son Edwin H. (Bill) is a salesman for Joy Mfg. Co., out of Vancouver, B. C. Next son, Peter is a mining engineer at the Butaunea Mine of Howe Sound Co., north of Vancouver (Univ. of B.C. grad); our granddaughter, Ruth, B.A. Queens University, is a lab. technician in Spokane, Wash., where she is befriended by Ray and Marion Schulte. Only Inez, the eldest is married."
Fritz Haver's son Robert has written from Pueblo, Colo., more details of Fritz's passing. His wife, Ruth B. Haver, passed away on April 17, 1953. He was an active Realtor in Haver Land Company, which was founded in 1900 by Fritz's father Edwin B. Haver. His death was very sudden and quite unexpected. He went to sleep watching television and didn't wake up. He is survived by five children, Frederick W. Haver Jr., Robert T. Haver, Jasper B. Haver, all of Pueblo; Jane H. Wiscoxson of Colorado Springs, and Annlouise H. Bratt of Denver.
Ralph and Florence Samuel returned to New York the middle of May from a European trip, the feature of which was 12 (lays behind the "Iron Curtain," Leningrad, Moscow and Prague. A most interesting account was given in the June News Letter.
Our Forty-Fifth Reunion will be in June 9-11, 1958, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, at which time the classes of 1912, 1914 and 1918 will also be in Hanover celebrating their respective reunions.
Plan now on your trip. Time is getting short and we will not have too many more reunions. Don't miss this or any more.
The new mid-week reunion plan permits the College to do a much better job, they say, in respect to feeding and housing classes, and permits also your enjoyment of Hanover in a more relaxed atmosphere as it is not tremendously crowded on these particular dates.
From now on each Newsletter will have information, program, lists of those planning on the trip and suggestions from any and all.
Earle and Marjorie Bidwell of Hartford, Conn., have been touring Europe this summer visiting Bruce, who is stationed over there. Cards from St. Jean de Luz and Rome reported a wonderful trip in progress.
It is with much sadness we report the passing of Helen Paris Smith, wife of Warren Smith on July 8 at Litchfield, Conn., of a coronary thrombosis. She with "Babe" had attended our last reunions. Two daughters, Mrs. Fanny Jane Bowers and Mrs. Joan S. Rath and five grandchildren also survive her.
"Caldy" Calderara has joined the retired ranks, due to his health. He continues to have the large family gatherings on July 4 which have proved themselves most worth while in maintaining closer family contacts even though all are somewhat separated in their daily activities. Seven children, six of them married, and 19 grandchildren.
Joe Cheney of Tallahassee, Fla., says he seldom sees the retired classmates wintering in Florida. As chairman of the Florida Parole Commission he does not expect they'll need his professional services. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of the National Probation and Parole Association at the organization convention in Denver, Colo., in July.
Ernest E. Thomas was honored by his associates in Middleboro on April 11, 1957. He is retiring this year as vice-principal of Memorial High after twenty years of service as head of the History Department. At a "This is Your Life" program at the new Middleboro Junior High School he was "selected" from the audience where he was shown a beautifully bound copy of "This is Your Life, Ernest E. Thomas" from which was unfolded the story of his life. Mrs. Thomas was escorted to the stage to share the "seat of honor." He has been a Trustee of the Middleboro Public Library, Treasurer of the Montgomery Home, Treasurer of the Rock Cemetery, Director of the Middleboro Savings Bank and Y.M.C.A., Registrar of Veteran's Graves and Financial Secretary of the Central Methodist Church. He is a member of Mayflower Lodge A.F. & A.M. and recently received his 35 year star as a member of S. L. Nickerson Post, American Legion. He has been a substantial citizen interested and active in civic interests.
Bart and Renza Shepard flew to Europe in August for an extended tour. More detailed reports will be given later. The partners of Charles H. Linscott & Co. are Mose and his son, John H. Linscott.
Dr. Harry French announces the engagement of his daughter, Dr. Edith Elizabeth French to Mr. Edward Connery Lathem of Hanover. Edith was graduated from Skidmore College and the McGill University Medical School. She interned at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, N. Y. At present she is in England at the Hammersmith Hospital of the Postgraduate Insti- tute of the U. of London. Edward Lathem graduated from Dartmouth and received his Master of Science degree from Columbia. He serves as Director of the Division of Special Collections in the Dartmouth College Library.
Pres. Dickey has announced the election to the rank o£ Professor Emeritus of Fred S.Page and seven other recently retired professors. Andrew Scarlett and Sid Hazelton are two well known to '13.
