DARTMOUTH MEN

Luncheon Every Monday Noon University Club, Chicago

BIGGEST NEWS FROM THIS AREA IS the forthcoming Hanover-Holiday-in-Chicago, which will come off Friday, February 6, 1948, at the University Club. It will be an all day and evening affair, designed to stimulate our intellect as well as to enlighten and entertain us. Wives will be included in the entire program, which will include talks by Dr. Chan on the subject of "China's Choice," and by Professor of History John Adams, who will discuss "Conflicts in Southeastern Europe." A prominent spot will be reserved for Tuss McLaughry, with a keynote address by President Dickey.

The Hanover-Holiday will be announced locally in The News, which has been ably edited by Connor Shaw '43 and Bill Abbott '27. The next issue is being written by HalSommer '40.

Hank Embree '30, chairman of Entertainment of our Association and wife Ruth, actively assisted by son Tom (registered for the class of '61) and daughter Sue, entertained officers of our Association and members of the Entertainment Committee and their wives recently. First came a business meeting, at which plans were developed for the spring visit of the Glee Club and the Barbary Coast orchestra. Enthusiasm ran high for a combination concert and dance to be held at one of the local hotels or clubs. Popular "Bunny" Coffin, loyal and energetic Dartmouth rooter and wife of Ax Coffin '24, was selected as secretary of the Committee to promote this feature event, and will act as liaison officer to coordinate men's and women's activities. It was decided to make the admission charge to the concert and dance as low as costs and expenses will permit. The net profit, if any, will be added to the Scholarship Fund. Lew Williams '10, DonMacKay '20, Bill Abbott '27, Bob McClory '30, Bob Critchell and Lyn Shellenberger '33, TomVent '39, and Connor Shaw '43, accompanied by their wives were also there and contributed their suggestions and offers to make the spring party the biggest Dartmouth reunion in years. Hank and Ruth Embree were gracious and generous hosts and when our business was done we played records made by the Dartmouth Glee Club while Hank filled the bowl up, and Ruth arranged large platters ladened- with good things to eat.

About a week later the Bal Tabarin of the Sherman Hotel had been reserved and arrangements are going forward to hold the concert and dance there on the evening of April 3, 1948.

We are glad to welcome to this area "Stoney" Jackson '36, who comes straight from Hanover where he was Assistant Dean. He has joined the John Marshall Insurance Company where we wish him every success.

A welcome visitor at our luncheon on December 15 was Jack Dingle '10, former president of our Association, who now lives in Wilmington, Delaware.

Our annual holiday cocktail party was held at the University Club on December 29, when a capacity crowd of undergraduates, alumni and an almost equal number of females relaxed from the Christmas strain and reflected in song and conversation on things relating to the College. JoePick '21 and Sam Hibben '51 were busy at the piano while vocalists, too numerous to mention, went through their repertoire. Among the less familiar faces we were pleased to see A. E. Davidson '22 and son Ted Davidson '51, Eddie Williams '50 and John Pine '45, who is now a professor at Hastings College, Nebraska.

Romantic news which has reached our attention includes the engagement of SteveRothermel '44 to Elizabeth Dovenmuhle of Winnetka, Ed. Woolman '46 to Gene O'Brien, Bob Sullivan '39 to Jacqueline Northrop of Lake Bluff, and Truman Metzel Jr. '48 to Elnora Louise Harkness.
