By the time this reaches all of you, the football season will be more than half over, and the class mini-reunion at the Yale game will be history. At this writing (and there is usually about a five-week delay between deadline and publication) the Wildcats of New Hampshire have upset our annual apple cart, and the game with Holy Cross is about to take place.
In case any of you who wish to express your thoughts to officers of the College feel that you will not receive appropriate attention, a young alumnus recently wrote a thoughtful letter with respect to a particular faculty member, who was under consideration for tenure. He addressed it to
"Dear Secretary, or whoever will read this." In the middle of his letter he stated "Isn't it fun to think that some secretary will actually read this." He received a reply from President Kemeny stating that his letter, including the skeptical remarks, was read carefully by six senior members of the faculty, the Dean of the faculty, and the President.
Last summer, a special program was held under the auspices of the Rensselaer County Environmental Management Council, in Troy, New York, at which the guest speaker was Dr. HarlanBrumsted, who is a nationally known conservationist. Harlan has been a member of the faculty at Cornell since 1954, and is the author of many publications on conservation related subjects. He has been the recipient of the Wildlife Society Award for conservation education; all of you who attended the 25th Reunion will remember his delightful participation in the forum with respect to "Youth in the 70's."
Dr. Robert W. Winter has been reappointed to the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Board under the auspices of the Los Angeles Municipal Arts Commission. After graduation from Dartmouth. Bob received his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins, and is now professor of the History of Ideas at Occidental College. He is co-author of various architectural publications, and is a past president of the Southern California Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians.
Our class was honored this spring by the election of Tom Cochran to the Dartmouth College Alumni Council, from the region which comprises the southwestern states. Tom received his la" degree from Stanford in 1951, and after Navy server and law practice in Los Angeles, joined KerrMcGee Corporation, in Oklahoma City, in 1968.
A major article in Connecticut Businessmen recently featured our John Emery, and his outsiandin'a address to a meeting of the Sales Executives Club in New York. John is now president of Emery Air Freight Corp.; he started with the Company in 1946 as a truck driver, at a time when the air freight industry was in its infancy. He has diversified the company, which now offers a full range of services to ocean shippers, surface freight forwarders and airline agency franchises, with emphasis on containerization. The company's management techniques and corporate philosophy have received wide, favorable commendation. John is also a member of the advisory board of Chemical Bank, a trustee of Manhattan Colleae, and a director of various corporations.
The Milford National Bank and Trust Company has announced the election of JosephVitalini to its board of directors. Joe is president and treasurer of B. Vitalini, Inc. in Milford, and active in many community activities. Fie and Rita have three children; Beth Anne, a recent graduate of Springfield College; Tom, a junior at Springfield; and Bill, a freshman at Milford High School.
From Cleveland comes the welcome news that Renold Thompson has become executive vice president - operations of Oglebay Norton, and will be responsible for the direction of all of the company's operations and services. Ren has previously held top management responsibilities in several divisions of the company and was most recently in charge of its iron ore and vessel operations. He is active in numerous professional and business associations in the iron ore and steel industry, and a director of various corporations. Ren. Shirley, and their three children live in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Martin Brusse, the president of Rocky Mountain/Orthodontics, has announced that new name of his company, which was formerly known as Rocky Mountain Dental Products Company. This Denver-based organization is world-famous for its international operations, including computerized information services for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning throughout the world.
A recent telephone chat with President Dave Weld brought forth the welcome news that GeneBokor's son has recently been the principal scorer on the Dartmouth soccer team. If Gene acted as goalie during years of fouthful practice, his children would have to have developed unerring aim for the small open portions of the goal.
