Better days appear to be ahead for the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California. There has been a marked increase in interest in the Club's activities and in the membership.
At the Annual Meeeting held in March at the home of Pete Talbot '38, near Woodside, the following were elected as directors: Carl Ward '32, president; Bob Allen '33, vice-president; Winsor Wilkinson '10, secretary-treasurer; Gus Ayers '06 and Bill Danforth '41, directors.
The cost of the Quonset hut on the Club's property at Donner Summit, which was wrecked just before its completion late in 1946, has been assumed by a group of local Dartmouth men who have taken the Club's notes. This relieves a bad situation, for although we are still in debt we now have time in which much can be accomplished.
The Second Annual Spring Party (neighborhood type), with some fine sound and color films from Hanover, was held in April. About 125 Dartmouth people attended the three meetings at the homes of Jim Lull '3l in Berkeley, Al Livingston '15 in San Francisco, and Ray Taylor '11 in Palo Alto.
Late in May a most enjoyable picnic, which included a swim in, a neighbor's pool, was held near Los Gatos for members of the Club with Dave Bender '31 as host. The lunches were auctioned, netting a tidy sum for the Club's building fund.
The snows came late to the Sierra this year and stayed late, but by the time this appears in the MAGAZINE, work will have started on the Club's permanent Lodge at Donner Summit. The plan for this summer and fall is to build, on the north half of the existing foundation and floor, the shell of a twostory timber structure. This will provide shelter for about a dozen next winter, when what remains of the Quonset can be used for utility purposes. A year hence we can then remove the Quonset and complete the timber structure on the entire 21 by 48 foot floor.
