Normally the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California is ably represented in this magazine by Winsor D. Wilkinson '10, secretary-treasurer of the, club. However, this month I am going to deviate from the normal procedure and dedicate this article to the unbelievable job performed by the club members.
I knew from various reports and bulletins that the Outing Club had some type of cabin near Conner Pass in the High Sierras, and had toyed with the idea of going up there on a vacation. Suddenly, in the spring of this year, the nebulous idea sprang into being as my wife informed me that we wouldn't be taking any vacation at all unless we could do it on a shoestring. I started doing some serious checking on the cabin and found that for $5.00 initiation fee I could become a fullfledged member even though I had not done one lick of work in building the cabin. Four of us went up for a period of four days and the average charge was only $1.25 a person per night. This included abundant wood stacked next to the stove, utilities, staples, etc.
Corresponding rates at adjacent Tahoe were approximately ten times that much! The cabin was well constructed, roomy, clean, and neat. Not only was it but a few miles from beautiful Tahoe and easily accessible to that wicked city of sin, Reno, but, in addition, it had its own private little lake a .stone's throw from the front door. We spent a perfect vacation there; our only regret being that we hadn't planned to stay at least twice as long. Next year we will know better and plan accordingly.
If space permitted I would like to mention every member of the club that contributed to the building of the cabin. Unfortunately, it is too limited so I shall mention only the directors: Bob Allen '33, Dave Bender '31, Alan Grant '43, Bruce Leeger '46, Gus Rosenthal '43, Tavey Taylor '28, Carl Ward '32, Jim Wilbee '42. Bob Allen was recently elected the new president.
I do want to pinpoint the location of the cabin for future reference of any visitors to the coast. It is used primarily in the winter for skiing parties and is generally free in the summer when Eastern tourists might find it a most economical place to spend part of their vacation. Upon reaching the sign marking the top of Donner Summit, elevation 7,129 feet, eleven miles west of Truckee, California on U.S. #40, you turn south off the main highway and the cabin is a third of a mile off the road on Lake Mary.
Maybe Duncan Hines hasn't got around to recommending this mountain resort as yet, but take the word of a discriminating '43 and take advantage of this little bit of Hanover 3,000 miles west of New Hampshire.
