1948-1949 was a rough year on Dartmouth men with the scotching blasts from the Chicago Tribune, the Cirotta case, the Vermont incident.... and when such things are all over they do not leave a good taste in anyone's mouth .... of course, far better if they had never happened .... never in 44 years of Dartmouth affiliation have we heard so many mean things said about the College .... and when you as an individual try to defend against them, and Dartmouth is by no means defenseless, it is a bit like shadow-boxing.
At times the absuid and furious credulity of the public is incredible .... and we have received blasts in person and by mail from Florida to the Canadian line, and from California to Maine .... too many greying, balding moralizing lecturers in their current carpet-slipper period have forgotten their own youthful days.... as well as the fact that the boys of 1950 do things which the boys of 1910 didn't do, and that the boys of 1910 did things which the lads of 1870 didn't do ....
and that the norm of social customs and mind has changed, whether or not we like it.
The colleges of the country face difficult problems .... they need courage, understanding and sympathy to help them solve their challenge .... it may be that they will have to tighten their disciplinary methods (most folks need some sort of discipline from cradle to grave).
We feel deeply for John Dickey and his administrative associates who are striving to conceive and install a long-range program that will place Dartmouth at top of the troubled collegiate world .... and when that is accomplished, he can go home and enjoy a full night's sleep, something which he has not always indulged himself in during the past year.
