Unfortunately I have to begin this column on a very low note. On February 18, Dan Fuchs died of a brain tumor in Washington, D.C. Mike Neary, Brad Little, Charlie Boarman, and I represented the class at his funeral in Washington, where an eloquent eulogy by Jeff Miller was read. Danny's death represents not only a great loss to his family and friends but also to the College. He had an extraordinary wit and a brilliant mind. Danny was also a sensitive and extremely perceptive individual. With his death, Dartmouth has lost a loyal and distinguished son. The Fuchs family has suggested that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Dartmouth College Daniel G. Fuchs Memorial Fund, in care of Bruce Philipson, 1775 K Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20006. Danny's obituary will be in this or the next issue.
Turning to the news of the month, Blaine Winship sent word that he is practicing antitrust defense law with the Chicago firm of Sonnenschein, Carlin, Nath, and Rosenthal. He has also just recently married Karin M. Byrne (Elmhurst College '76, Chicago-Kent College of Law '80). Blaine graduated from Cornell Law School in 1976.
Another Dartmouth lawyer, Rich Merrill, recently married Thea Marie Fasio (Smith '76), as previously reported in this column, and is now living in Houston, Tex. However, Rich has changed jobs and is currently working as district counsel for the southeastern district of Texas Oil and Gas Corporation. He was formerly with the Amoco Production Company's legal staff.
Chooi-Lye-Ch'ng set the record this month for corresponding from the farthest distance Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Chooi sent this note along with his dues to Class Treasurer Joe Powers: "My family was honored to have Professor Baldwin of the Economics Department and his family visit us in Kuala Lumpur in early March 1979. . . . Our second child Kean Boon (a boy) was born on May 17, 1979. Our elder son Kean Tat is five years old. ... I am still working for Citibank, N.A., Kuala Lumpur branch."
Jim Broderick is also working for a bank, but on the other side of the world. Jim graduated from Harvard Business School in June 1978 and is now working as assistant treasurer for the Springfield Institution for Savings in Springfield, Mass. Jim's wife Pam (Smith '74) is currently a recruiter for Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.
Allan "Bic" Jayne is employed as a computer software consultant in the Greater Boston and southern New Hampshire area. Bic is also studying for his real estate broker's license.
I have just learned that Reed Greene was married on December 1, 1979, to Cecilia Skrobarczyk of Corpus Christi, Tex. Reed, congratulations! Rumor has it that Scott Sherman and Trevor Rees-Jones were in attendance.
John Woodhouse is a lieutenant in the Navy. He has recently completed the Information Officer Course at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis. He studied journalism, international relations, public speaking, and broadcasting in preparation for becoming a public affairs officer for the Navy.
Dick Rosston wrote from Anchorage, Alaska, where he has recently married (the former Joy Landholm) and where he practices law with the firm of Ely, Gusee, and Rudil. "Joy and I both ski patrol, hike, etc., right out our back door." Matt Montagne was the best man at Dick's wedding. Matt is running a summer camp in the Grand Tetons, is coaching Nordic skiing in Montana, is a U.S. ski team regional biathlon coach, and worked on the cross-country races at the Olympics. Obviously Matt is deeply committed to the wide world of sports.
Dick also reported that Sam Livermore is working for Thelen, Marrin, Johnson, and Bridges as an attorney in San Francisco. And, according to Dick, Bob Page "is chasing coyotes and wild pigs and looking for uranium in his spare time for Noranda in Arizona."
Finally, I have news of yet another Dartmouth lawyer. In speaking to Charlie Boarman at Dan Fuchs' funeral, I learned that he is now working as a county attorney in Bel Air, Md., while building up his own private practice on the side. Charlie clerked for one of the Maryland trial courts for a year after finishing law school. If any alum gets nailed for DWI by one of those tough Maryland troopers, just call Charlie. Guaranteed results.
That's all the news that's fit to print. If you have a chance, drop me a note with some class news. See you next month.
